I'm looking for a brand new performance car. It can be a 2-door coupe or a 4-door sedan. What's the best US make and model production car can I get for $35,000 cash, and why? What would you get for that amount?

What about for $50,000?

For 35,000 dollars and an American make you're generally looking at a Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300C or Pontiac GTO. Of those in that price range, the GTO is the clear victor. Of course it's not very well reckognized because of poor marketing but guess what - that's your gain. You can probably argue a pretty good deal on one and here's what it has going for it:

In a recent automobile magazine showdown between the GTO and a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra, the GTO was rated higher. Rated higher on performance than a car with a reputation like the Cobra is something to say for it. It is smoother shifting, has plenty of power (I got to drive one btw).

I've seen my share of domestic models and there isn't much to say for most interiors but the GTO is well appointed inside and very modern. Quality materials are used and the seats are very comfortable - even the rear seats.

When talking about American autos I believe it to be the clear winner for that price range - and you could get one decked out.

Otherwise I'd have to say buy a 3 series BMW

and for 50g's a porsche cayman s

For $35k, you get maybe a Volkswagon Pasaat. There was a time, you could get a Ford Mustang for that, but they go up yearly. $50k? I'd guess, a Kia or Honda. with anyone of those 3, you'd get smooth ride, smooth handling, smooth performance, maybe attract girls (or if you're a girl, men), the durabitliy of a of tank, or close to it. Perhaps a terriific cd player, Leather seats, power steering, power in times that you need to go faster. some times a rebate, a feeling of pride and happiness.

At the 35K price point Consumer Reports says get the Infinity G35.

For me, I'd pocket the 10K difference and get a loaded Accord V6 in a heartbeat.

An Infiniti G35 or a Nissan 350Z

They stand out in a crowd, handle terrific and will hold their value for years, unlike American cars other than the Vette.

you may be able to get a base 330i for 35k, that is definately the best sports sedan around. For 50k, I would have to go with an M3 which can be had for just under 50k.

Probably a Hemi Charger, maybe a V-8 Mustang for 35k.

For 50K. maybe the Shelby Mustang or Corvette if it's below 50K.
