What is the best way to most effectively help in Africa (or any place in need for that matter)? I am a big supporter of the ONE campaign. But have also heard that their efforts (and other organization's money) are not getting past the corrupt government and to the people, and that nothing is changing. What is the best thing we, as individuals and a country, can do to help?

One of the best charities to give to is Samaratin's Purse. Franklin Graham has been helping countries all over the world and one of his projects is helping the people of Africa. They are sending medicines for HIV/AIDS, building homes and orphanages, sending food and digging wells. These are just a few of their programs. They also send a yearly report to all their donors, letting them know how the monies are being spent. Although this is a christian organization (some people have a problem with that), they are doing a lot of good work in this world of ours. You should check them out.

You have heard right. The American government has been shipping tons of food to africa and it is the african govenments that stop the food or aid to getting to the people. If you could, I would find a contact in Africa that is NOT an offical. Send the money or items directly to the people.
