I want to rent a traditionally furnished and comfortable cottage somewhere relaxing in Thailand, except Phuket.
I don't like hotels because I feel that they will prevent me from truly experiencing Thailand. Has anyone stayed in places other than a hotel while in Thailand? How was the experience? Specific recommendations would be appreciated very much.

I plan to stay for 2-3 days in Bangkok and then move on to a rented cottage for about a week.

There are many homestay places and resorts that have small cottage style bungalows to stay in - I have stayed in many of these and enjoy them - maybe google homestay.. if you do not want to do this in a tourist area - then pick someplace that you have not heard of.. if you want specific recommendations, you can contact me.. but I do not know if you are looking for beach or mtns or what - - having a car can get you to places that are off the path a bit - but buses can easily get you to some smaller cities that are really Thai..

I think if you want a comfy cottage as described, you are most likely going to be some place set up for tourists.. Thai's squat.. and in the village areas, homes are Thai style which does not necessarily have much furniture or a/c or western toilets.. etc.. but these small resorts would probably work well for you..

Hi. Thailand is awash with houses bungalows condos rooms etc to rent. You didn't specify the area you'd like to be in, so I'll go ahead and direct you to my favorite place for vacations. Krabi is located on the Andaman coast. It has an airport so you don't need to go to Phuket. I drive there from Bangkok via Ranong, which is a beautiful thing to do in itself. You go through rain forests and see amazing stuff on the way. Krabi coast is about as beautiful as anything I've seen and I've been everywhere (man). As for traditionally furnished houses, there actually arent that many compared to the usual tourist accomodations, as people generally prefer 'the comforts of home' on holiday. But google Krabi and you'll have lots of great choices. It's way cheaper than Phuket too! Hope this helps

you do not specify where abouts in thailand you would like to go but you know what thailand is one of those places you do not need to book in advance you can just get your flight turn up and find somewhere if you are worried book somewhere for the first night you get to your destination then get out there and have a look around and find somewhere, what you describe as wanting to experience the true thailand the get used to forgetting about your home comforts, sit on the floor, forget western toilets, its all about simplicity what you describe as a comfortable cottage is diffinatly for the tourist. there is nothing wrong with this have fun whereever you stay!

It may not be exactly what you are looking for but if you are only staying for a week or two I rented a small cottage, no cooking facilities, in Ko Samoi. It had nice gardens and a private clean beach. Dirty beaches are common in many tourist spots like Pattaya. The name of the place I believe was the "Montien".

Thailand is a pretty big place to say except Phuket! North, south, east or central? You have to cut it finer for people to help you. You can contact ken if you want to go to the remote north! :) Or you can contact me at tongbn@yahoo.co.uk with your needs and I will see if I can provide you with some ideas.
