The effects of lyme disease in border collies is the same as for other dogs: fever, lameness, lethargy & anorexia. There may or may not be swelling of the joints.
Does your dog have these symptoms? Have you taken your dog's temperture? Normal is 101 to 102. How do you know this is lyme disease?
There are 3 forms of lyme disease & yes, lyme disease is fatal.
So, if your dog has the symptoms, I think I would do more than wait for it to kill him. Lyme disease is TREATABLE with antibotics.

No, it will not necessarily kill him, but do make sure he gets on the appropriate antibiotics (often Doxycycline).
I've had two dogs with Lymes. One has passed of old age by now, but the other is less than two years old and his symptoms have vastly improved since treatment. We'll see in the fall if it may even have gone away.
I assume if your BC has been diagnosed that you've already seen a vet, but be sure to talk to your vet about the expected prognosis. It's unlikely to be fatal.

Get him to the vet FAST. They MAY be able to save his life. Tick-borne illnesses are very serious, sometimes fatal. Act fast.

Call your VET if your not sure - don't take the chance of loosing your dog to stupidity. I mean - asking questions about something you love, is something you do.
