a missing dog just came to my house, it has a collar and a tag that reads ohio 2006 dog, highland county, 2646, or something among those lines, is there anyway to check the owner by that tag?

Call the county's Animal Services. All rabies tags are licensed and kept in a data bank. The owner who purchased the tag will be listed and can be notified.

Yes, possibly.
Take it to an animal hospital. A veterinarian.

They will look at the dogs teeth for a computer chip.
On the chip, if the dog has one, will be all the information.

Only a veterinarian knows how to read the chip and use the device that reads it.

You have been given more information than you realize.

You know the dog comes from a state that has a "Highland county in it. Considering you found it in your own state, I'd guess that county is IN your state.

Look it up on your computer. All states, if Highland county doesn't exist in your state.

Ask.com........All states with Highland county.

Armed with that, you now have an address. 2646.
Go to the fire dept. and tell them what you know.
They work with the police and are friends.

The fire dept. loves animals!!!

They will make a quick call to the police and within seconds you will have the location of the dogs home.

The police have computers that do just that. Find a residence quickly.

They won't mind. It makes them feel good to reunite a lost pet with it's owner.

Do the right thing. That doggie wants to go home and be with his family.

The reason I didn't suggest the animal shelter first, is because they can't get the information like the polive via fire dept.

They are more likely going to just take the dog, put him in a cage and wait to see if anyone calls and asks about it.

If that doesn't happen(and it usually doesn't. For a multitude of reasons), they will keep him for just a few months. Maybe 3 and put him to sleep.

I know. I used to do volunteer work for them.

The dog doesn't stand much of a chance there. Most are put to sleep.

PLEASE don't bring him there unless all else has failed.

You might even try to find him a home yourself, if you can't locate the owner/owners. But I'm betting you do!

Best thing you can do is probably first take it a vet clinic, they have microchip scanners there and check to see if its microchipped, also they might be able to call and trace the rabies tag for you(thats what the tag is on the collar), it should be at no cost to you too, at least thats what we do. If that doesnt work or they cant do that id get ahold of the spca or animal shelter or whoever, and they can either trace the rabies tag, or if thats a no go, youll probably have to give it up and hope they can find a home for it. If you do all that, youve done more than a lot of people do when they find animals and you should feel damn good about it. Hope that helps.
oh yeah and the number on the tag isnt an address most likely, its probably just the tag number from wherever they got the shot, and about the spca thing, theres nothin else you can do, but since it has a tag and obviously a home, they will hold off a lot longer before putting them to sleep, trust me on that one, everyone thinks its so horrible over there, they get a lot more than 3 weeks trust me id know. Anyways i hope everything works out, make sure you def. try the vet clinic first though, and also the microchips arent in their teeth haha, dont know where you got that, they implanted in the back right inbetween the shoulder blades. Good luck and i hope you find the owner.

the tag is a rabies tag stating that the dog has had its shots the 2646 is the lot number of the shot, call the humane society in highland county Ohio, and if they should be able to at least give you information where that lot number was given, as far as a vet clinic or pet smart or such a place as that..
good luck

The name is slipping my mind, but the county office where you register your dog and get tags.....call them and with the numbers on the tag they can get you in touch with the owners. We found a dog last year in Franklin County,OH and thats how we found the owners. Good thing too because all four of my kids wanted to keep the dang thing!

Call your local shelter, they can look up the numbers in their system, and find the dog right away. Also, call the newspaper, if they just got home and realized their dog was missing they may have placed an ad, but it will probably take a day or two to come out in the actual paper. The newspaper should be able to tell you if they called and placed an ad, and give you their number.

Call highland county animal license dept at the city hall.
Good luck. I wonder how long the dog's been lost and how far he travelled. It might make an interesting story.

Call animal control in that county. That sounds like a license tag and they can id the dog with that. Good luck (poor little doggy).

Sounds like that is just his tag he got when he got his annual rabies vaccination. Just put up some signs or put an ad in the paper. Or take him to the pound for the owners to find.
