My dog Keiko is 8 months old. Never once has she barked. However, when the other dog tries to eat her food she growls. Why is this? Is it possible she will never bark?

Yes she does come when I call. She hears well and for a young dog follows commands well too.

Some breeds don't bark. We had our husky for a few months before we herd him bark, and I wondered the same thing you are now. I found out that Huskies, as a general rule, just don't bark all that often. What kind of dog do you have?

A pet dog, unless its job is to protect its owner from burglars, is probably better off not barking.
It might be personality or a physical handicap.
Count your blessings. You might have been lying awake at night, counting the barks.

If you are worried about her hearing, put some pennies or rocks in a can. When she isn't looking, shake the can and see if she reacts.
Could just be that she has nothing to bark about, but that would be rare!

Maybe she doesn't really have anything to say! It's not abnormal for a dog not to bark, but maybe next time you take her to the vet get her throat checked.

Some breeds don't bark alot-- they cry or make other noises. It could be genetic.

I think that her vocal cords could be damaged. I would take her to the vet.
