A few deep breaths and try to relax. (If you have an ativan or xanax now is the time you get to take one- I understand.) If there are others in the elevator try and start a conversation about something not related to the elevator and being stuck. Ask about their kids, jobs, where they live - there's always the weather to talk about. If you're alone, get the book out of your purse/pocket (you do have one, right? something to do in times like this). And do you best to get into it. (I know, it's hard to get interested right now, but make the effort.) The point is to get your mind off of your current circumstances. It may help to consciously remind yourself that you're more then likely quite safe, and the anxiety you feel is temporary.

DON'T PANIC! First, you are probably just fussing over nothing; people very, very rarely get stuck in elevators. And if an elevator does stop unexpectedly, it usually is corrected in a very short time. So just remind yourself, there's really nothing to worry about, there's no need to panic, and take deep, slow breaths. If anyone else is in the car with you, and they ask if you are all right, just say, "Well, it makes me a little nervous." See, you don't pretend it doesn't bother you, but you also don't blow it out of proportion.

sit down in the middle of the elevator and close your eyes. breathe deeply, and visualize that you are in a wide open space, like a field or somewhere outside.

Lie down on the floor on your back, look up and relax. Try to take a nap until they get the doors open for you.

It depends on how you react , if you have a panic attack cup both hands over your mouth and breath deeply into them . It has a calming effect , but it doesn't work for everyone
