face it

2006-06-23 14:04:21 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

There's no need to 'get over' fear. Fear is a very useful emotion. Fear stops a healthy person from walking alone in a seedy place where they are likely to be mugged, fear stops a healthy person from hurting themselves or hurting other people, fear gives you the energy to defend yourself or get yourself out of danger.

It does have to be controlled and directed for usefulness, however. If it is erratic or irrational it can be very destructive. Erratic or irrational fears can be controlled with focus, willpower and self-awareness.

By studying and understanding the power of fear and discovering WHAT is the root of your fear of something. Once you logically see what's causing it, it may become something you will be willing to face and THEN you begin to try overcoming that obstacle.
Fear is a very powerful motivator, but it's not the only motivator. You can overcome any fear. I truly believe that.

Ask yourself if it's rational. If it is, ask yourself what you can do to change your situation (move out of the neighborhood, never see that person again, get out of the rain if it's lightening and thundering- silly goose!....)

If it's irrational- well remind yourself that it's irrational- no real need to be afraid. You can learn to deal with a repeating irrational fear through desensitization, counseling, support groups. (Recovery, Inc. teaches some very useful tools to help you reduce fear) And there is medication as a last resort.

There are many ways 2 of them are whats called flooding and desensitation;
1. face what you fear and do not give in eg. afraid to be locked in lock yourself in somewhere and do not come out until your fear has gone.
2. face your fear gradually eg. spiders, look at pictures, tv progs. etc. till there are no anxieties then look at a real spider and gradually get nearer, then when you are able look at it, or pick it up, if its safe to do so that is.

Face it a little bit at a time. I am scared of dogs and water. I am starting to get over the water thing b/c every time I get a chance, I get out and just keep inching my way into the water and now I can at least swim.

first you need to educate yourself about what your afraid of...
i am scared to death of bridges....so i watched one being built...it helped, i am still deeply, unreasonably afraid...at first...but then in a moment..i can think myself through and drive across!
:D..
believe you can...and you will

Since fear is mostly about ignorance, the best part is that it's as temporary as you choose.

The trouble with most people is that they think with their hopes or fears or wishes rather than with their minds.
