You should try to find out ahead of time whether the building you're moving into is a walk-up or an elevator building. If its an elevator building, there may be only certain days or hours which you can use it to move furniture. If its a walk-up, make sure you either have people to help you or extra money to pay your movers to take your stuff up the stairs.

Try to have your electricity turned on for the day you move in if not earlier. You may want to use a VOIP for your phone line, and your internet provider is someone else you'd want to set up an appt with maybe the day after you arrive.

Before you move in, try to find out as much as you can about your neighborhood. Its not a bad idea to have a box labelled with all the stuff you'll need right away like toilet paper and cleaning supplies--even something to cover the windows with-- unless your new place is right next to a 24 hour discount drug store or supermarket. Delis are everywhere, but they are pricey.

You may also want to make an appt with a locksmith to change your locks that first day as well. You don't know how many people have lived in the apt before, and how many of their friends and family already have keys.

You are moving to the best city in the world, so do everything you can to make the most of it!

1. Money. Money. Money.
2. Make sure your apt is close to everything (ie grocery store, laundrymat, dry cleaners, restaurants...etc)
3. You will not need a car except to get out of the city
4. If you are coming from a warm climate, make sure you have winter clothes for when that hits.
5. Get a map (There's at least 3 ways of getting anywhere in Manhattan)

Don't walk in a dark alley at night all by yourself.

Don't move if you don't have a job there yet.

And it's Manhattan
