I don't seem to have as much energy as most people, including my elderly parents. I am 40 and dont' really work many hours so it isn't job fatigue. I try to get up at a good time in the morning (8 or 9) and I work in the evenings for 5 or 6 hours. I have days that I get alot done and then days that I just don't want to do anything. I usually don't go out on the days I work because i woudl be too tired by the time I got to work. I have to walk alot and it is extreemly hot here and i know that has some effect. I eat what I can eat but can't go out and buy a bunch of supplements and I have tried some vitamins and they tended to give me headaches rather than energy. I can't really exercise because I can't get out and walk for leisure or anything and can't afford to go anywhere to work out and can't buy equiment or anything. I have people talking to me about how they are going out partying all night when they get off work at 10 pm .

OLD? At 40??!!??!! Hahahahahahaha!
Naaaaaaaaaaaaah. First of all no one has energy to be outside when it's so hot. I do it but it's torture and depressing for me.
You have some depression and also lack of motivation. They're connected. It would help if you could find something to be interested in, a hobby of some sort; even regular exercise is a hobby, it will make you feel better about yourself, and you can do a lot of things without any expensive equipment. You can exercise to music or while watching tv, too. Or take some free classes at the community college and study something new to exercise your mind.
Don't bother with vitamin supplements; just be sure you get the MDR's but don't overload; even too much Vitamin C can be bad for you because it weakens the walls of the arteries. There are no miracles here, no magic pills to change your life.
I sometimes go thru a cleaning frenzy and I feel good about it but how often do you need to do it? I get energy by being interested in different things, and I never feel I have more time than I know what to do with, and I don't need to go anywhere (except in my mind).
Listen, you want to meet educated guys with good taste, etc. As one of your answerers said, you're not likely to meet them if you're not more like them. Why don't you see what kinds of free or low cost classes you can take in music or art appreciation, etc?
Hang in there.

First of all you're never too old. I'm 53. I have more energy now then I did at 40. I had really bad chronic fatigue then. I had the mercury removed from my teeth and that helped tremendously. (I also had a severe headache that got worse every yr., and it went away completely as soon as all the mercury was gone.)
I also found that changing my blood pressure pills helped. I had to convince my doctor that I had "white coat" syndrome and that it really was much better when I was home relaxed. I got rid of one pill from the certain class of blood pressure pills and had a new lease on life( as they say).
It could also be depression. When I'm depressed I can't do anything. I'm bipolar. In the beginning my mood swings seemed more like good days when I got things done, and bad days when I just laid around too tired to move.
I found even now, I sometimes I have to make myself exercise. Once I get going, I'm ok. I don't do anything strenuous- just walking- swimming if there's some place to do it. I know what you mean about not being in a neighborhood where you can walk. Maybe there's a mall where you can walk from one end and back to the other. I've had to do that one place where I lived.

Get your thyroid checked! It's a simple blood test to measure your thyroid horomones, and if you are hypo, you just take a pill to replace the missing horomone.
I wasn't diagnosed and felt mentally foggy and exhausted all the time. After I got the correct dosage, the difference was dramatic. I've also lost over 40 pounds, the first 35 of that was due to the horomone replacement.
The symptoms of a thyroid disorder are vague and can be mistaken for a lot of other things including "just getting old". But you will notice the difference after about 6 weeks if you get a replacement horomone and it turns out the thyroid was the problem all along. Good luck!

I think the first thing you need to do is have a complete physical. If everything checks out okay, then I think you should ask the doctor for a recommendation for a good psychotherapist. It seems that you may be suffering from a depression. I can sense it in the tone and meter of your writing. For example, you keep stating what you "don't" do or "can't" do (4 don'ts followed by 5 can'ts in 9 sentences) as opposed to what you "do" do or "can" do. I've had experience in counseling, and you seem too young, too nice, and too bright not to nip this in the bud!

this is a difficult question you can have many health problems lets start with the vitamin's and headaches this can be a sign of chemical sensitivities which is more allergies than anything awls then people with multiple allergies develop brain fog no energy allot of fungus infections in their body .Another thing adrenal exhaustion the adrenal gland not working correctly or thyroid disease I can keep on and on. But the best thing is for you to see a doctor and get a complete physical and blood work and take it from there wish you the best don't give up!

first... a good physical......rule out anything medical
second.....question yourself...what are you eating?
third........why are you depressed? what is depressing you?because that is a leading cause of chronic fatigue....we have all been there.....
i will be 41 in august, and yes..i started the year a little down...i was getting up every day to a job I didn't want to do...never wanted to do..why? because i HAD too...well to hell with that!! {our selfish 40's HUZZAH!!}
now i have a job i HAVE always wanted to do, i have more energy then i did in my TEENS and i love life {it's not always roses...that's OK, i still love it!!}
take yourself out for a 99 cent Wendy's burger...by yourself...pull over in the parking lot...sit in your car, and eat...relax...leave the radio off...and ask yourself.....what do i want?...after 40 years walking this plant...what do I, capital I, want?....
