You CAN be excommunictated from the church for being a Mason, but that almost never happens. I am a Catholic and a Mason. It is true that Catholicism would prefer its members to join the Knights of Columbus, and frown on the joining of Freemasonry. The truth is that the Catholic Knights of Columbus are very strongly based on Freemasonry! Still, while Catholicism has Papal denouncements of Freemasonry, Masons do not care what religious affiliation our members have. Being a Catholic, I struggle with this, but I also know that if Freemasonry ever acted contrary to my beliefs, I would not be inolved with it, and here I am, still a member and I love the Fraternity.
Please don't let brother Dan Y's grammar, punctuation, and spelling of the word "clue" above lead you to believe that we are not intelligent people. We come from all walks of life. Some brothers are rural farmers, some are waiters, some are bankers, and some are computer programmers. Not all of us have mastered the art of communication and spelling :)

Not many people are excommunicated these days. That's a pretty serious step, and it's saved for only the very worst cases. You wouldn't be excommunicated for joining the Free-Masons. The Church might ask that you don't receive communion, however, or even refuse it to you, depending on what beliefs you've chosen. What's most important, though, is what you think is right. Follow your conscience.

Here are a few reasons why Freemasonry conflicts with Catholicism:
Freemasonry promotes indifferentism, the heretical (to Christians) belief that all religions are equally legitimate attempts to explain the truth about God but that this truth will never be explained. This is incompatible with Christian faith because Christians believe that God has definitively revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, and desires that all men come to the knowledge of this truth.
Freemasonry's teachings and practices also result in syncretism which is the blending of different religious beliefs into a unified whole. This shown in Masonry's religious rituals, which gather men of all faiths around a common altar, and place all religious writings along side the Bible on the Masonic altar.
The Lodge's practice of requiring its members to swear immoral oaths is also incompatible with Christianity. These oaths require a Christian to swear on the Holy Bible that he will uphold a code of moral conduct that prefers Masons to non-Masons, and to preserve secret passwords and handshakes. Such oaths are immoral because they are trivial and not necessary. These oaths are sworn under penalties of physical torture and death (e.g., having my throat cut across, and my tongue torn out by its roots). These penalties show a lack of respect for God.
With love in Christ,

I suggest that if you get into Free Masonry, the Catholic Church will be the last thing you should be worried about. Ted.

Yes, it's possible to be ex-communicated. My family was able to have me ex-communicated from the church based on a lie.
