I'm 14 and I can't stop cutting myself and I don't know why. It's like whenever I see a razor or something sharp, I want to hurt myself. Right now I feel ok, but in an hour I might be completely different. I don't think I'm depressed or anything, but what else could it be?

Yes, you CAN stop! You have a mind, and that mind is in control of your hand, and you can refuse to pick up the razor blade. Just refuse it. Talk to it if you need to: tell it that it is not your friend (which it clearly is not), and you are not going to have anything to do with it. Put it in your father's tool box or wherever it belongs. (I'm visualizing a single-edge blade, which belongs in a tool box. A double-edge blade belongs in its safety holder in the bathroom cabinet.) And don't let a little piece of steel rule you! You are tougher than it is!

So what if it wants to bite you; to hurt you? Why should you give in to it? YOU are in control of your life, not some idiot piece of steel!

My Steve used to call all such urges "demon attacks," because they really do come from outside you. They are not a part of you. Once during a storm, a live electric wire came down in our front yard, and I knew it was enough electricity to kill me. It frightened me, but it also fascinated me. I was both attracted and repelled. So I understand about the seductiveness of that "do something dramatic" impulse. People who stand on the edge of cliffs (like at the Grand Canyon) often report a crazy impulse to jump. Not because they really want to jump, but because humans have imagination, and your imagination will conjure the concept. It's your conscious mind that has to be the boss, and say, "Bull; that's no solution."

Believe me, self-destructiveness is no solution. My Steve committed suicide on December 16, 2005, and undermined his credibility on everything he had ever taught me as a result. So here we are, survivors, you and me. Let's get on with living!

Hey dont feel bad your not alone am 14 i cut myself and i can stop am not proud if it i just cant stop i wonder why. i got this from a site
Cutting can be habit forming. It can become a compulsive behavior - meaning the more a person does it, the more he or she feels the need to do it. The brain starts to connect the false sense of relief from bad feelings to the act of cutting, and it craves this relief the next time tension builds. When cutting becomes a compulsive behavior, it can seem impossible to stop. So cutting can seem almost like an addiction. A behavior that starts as an attempt to feel more in control can end up controlling you.

You should talk to your parents, or a school counselor if you feel more comfortable. Don't be afraid to talk it will help you figure some things out about yourself and about your cutting habits. The fact that you asked the question in this forum it's a good start. You should know that there are a lot of other people out there that are facing the same problem so don't hesitate.
.... and yes you can stop!!!! take care, be well.

If it hurts, then it sounds like you're trying to punish yourself for something. Figure out what you think you did, ask what other ways there are to atone for it- talk to someone.

If you feel numb to the pain, then maybe you have issues/memories relating to abuse that you're repressing. When you repress memories you stop the pain they cause- and sometimes you stop feeling altogether. Cutting allows you to feel something. Cutting is not a healthy way to deal with the lack of feelings. You have to deal with the issues, it's the only way to ever get better. And it takes professional help to do it!!!!!

Some people's depression surfaces as a numb empty feeling and they cut themselves to remind themselves they're alive. They just want to feel something- anything.

Either way, cutting is a symptom of serious issues and you need help- now!

If you can't talk to a parent, then talk to a school counselor. There are 1-800 numbers for teens who are in trouble and can't talk to the adults in their lives. Check the NAMI.org website and NMHA.org. Try this number- I found it through search on the web. 1-866-SAFEYOUTH (1-866-723-3968). I sounded the most useful. Don't wait- promise me- ok?

People do care!

There could be lots of reasons why you are hurting yourself. I agree with the others who say that you need to explore this with a therapist. Admitting something like this takes bravery and while you may not be feeling brave right now, you have definitely shown bravery by admitting this issue in a forum such as this. Use this bravery to seek a mental health professional. You may not be depressed but you may have a compulsion to harm yourself and it is very important to address this immediately.

Dear girl, Have you sought help through a therapist, counselor or doctor? Probably you are hurting inside over something. You need to find someone to listen to you and not be judgmental, but who can help you. Promise me you will. I know people who have cut themselves, and then were able to stop when they figured out what was hurting them inside and they had a way to let it out. It's hard being 14, that's for sure. Being 18 is a lot better, and soon you will be older and you will have more control over your life.
