I'm a Catholic, so I'm not trying to critical or "dis" anyone's beliefs. I just honestly don't understand it. And I've been searching and searching for answers 9online) and have found nothing. What is the logic? I know that it's said that the wedding should be in the church because it's the holy place of worship. But I've been to lots of masses outdoors. Are they less holy? To be truthful, I often felt a greater connection at those times than when indoors. Does anyone know the answer to this??

Yes, quite sure. I've been Catholic since I was born. We can have mass outside, it's just not done nearly as often. On some occasions though, it is. Like when I went on some trips with my church and our priest was there, we often held mass outside. The pope even did/does it.

What I'm confused by is why they (we) are so much more strict about having a *wedding* mass outside. I know it CAN happen, but it's not so easy...

Also, I wouldn't be interested in doing something other than a Catholic Mass for the wedding... and then having it blessed. I can't an actual mass.

Well I have heard that it depends on the priest. When I get married it will likely be in a pretty liberal area, with a fairly liberal congregation (for Catholics anyway, hehe).

As an aside, I'm not actually planning a wedding right now. But one may be not too far off, and I've had thoughts of how it should be. You know... vague planning... like a rough draft. hehe.

But I've still just always been really curious about this. Never quite understood.

Well to be honest, it's really up to the Priest. The more younger Priests may go for it, but the older ones who are more traditional may not. Man made the building, but God made the outdoors. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with getting married outdoors, and I've been to many, many weddings of all religions that were outdoors. The only downfall to an outdoor wedding is that you're at the mercy of the elements. If your Priest is steadfast against it, you can ask him to show it to you in the Bible where it says you can't be married outside. Another idea is to find another Priest to perform your wedding, one not as traditional. This is your day, not the Priest's. I would say that if you are steadfast, maybe he'll eventually give in. If he's a friend of the family, then maybe you can have your father or mother talk with him. Anyway, good luck with this and your upcoming wedding. May you have a beautiful wedding and a marriage that'll be the envy of your friends. Have a wonderful day.

I have never heard of an outdoor catholic mass. Are you sure you were at a catholic mass and not an episcopalian one?

Here's how you get away with this. Get married outdoors by whoever you can get to do it. Then after the wedding have your priest bless the marriage, which makes it legal in the eyes of the church.

I think you should talk to your monsignor or bishop, maybe they'll have a better explanation. Like I said I've never seen an outdoor mass and I've been catholic for 36 years. I don't count the pope because he can't fit everyone in a church. I agree though, if he can have an outside mass why can't you.

Actually there is no differance. I am a Catholic and at my church we have outdoor mass all of the time. There was a young couple you just got married at our outdoor seating area. There isn't a differance. Its your choice. Not the priest.

There probably is no logical reason. Or there is a very logical reason. Like acoustics, mosquito bites, rain, air traffic noise???????????
Why not ask your Priest?
