Here are a few suggestions, you may have already tried some or all ... but here goes.
1) Do a white pages search on his name, and call any and all names that come up, tell them you are doing geneology research, and did they ever live in such and such place (where ever he lived at some time, go back to time of your conception if that is all you know). If the answer is no, go on to the next name. If the answer is yes, ask a few other leading questions.
2) If you know where he was at a certain period of time, or where he came from, you can go back to highschool yearbooks, property records, etc, and compile as much info as you can.
3) You can call people with the same last name who live in or around areas he has lived and again saying you are doing geneology research, ask if he is a relative, and go from there with whatever info you get.
4) Pay one of the people search websites to get all the info yu can in one place ... it may be worth the cost ... they have access to places easier than you do because that is what they do. Make sure it is a reputable one.
5) Post on varioius geneology and people-search forums, and someone/s may offer to help you with your search. That is how I found my birthmother. (Still looking for birth father)
Hope this helps some, and good luck!
P.S. The social security death registry is available online free ... check this, also, if you know any other relatives names at all, like parents or grandparents, check here. Also ... do an open search on the last name for the state/s you know he has lived in ... you might find some relatives names to help in the search ... even dead peoples names can lead you in the search.

192 you need an address most of the time but to check electoral rolls you dont always need the address just a location, you can check a lot of them for free , ive looked up a few people for friends and found them didnt cost a thing , if your father lived in same place you were born then try their local registry office they might be able to help you

You could try www.192.com (if he's in the UK). Some entries are free to view but the Electoral Rolls you have to pay for (£150 a year and then a small amount for credits on top of that).

I've just posted a similar question re: my mum. It was the Salvation Army, not the Samaritans who traced her for me. They've got an online website thing, and you can just put in the details that you have. Bear in mind though, that like my mum, your dad may not want you to contact him. Good luck man.

You could try Ancestry.com.
Enter his name and they will do a search. If he has other children, another marriage or people for other reasons searching for him, Ancestry.com may find some info.
There is a fee to do certain searches. There is also a message board to post on.
I was a member, but had to cancel my membership for now due to medical bills

The American Red Cross helped my dad find his brother that he hadn't seen in 20 years. This was 15 years ago but you could look into it and see if they still do that.
