I arrested this girl once that actually primped in the mirror before they took her mugshot. Lots of eyes rolling in the jail that night. ha ha
Of course, all the way there she asked, "why are you doing this to me?" Like I make her decisions. Kids these days... no responsibility.

Haha, i would say the same thing. I would only imagine that they aren't smiling because, they are caught up thinking about what could, and will happen to them in prision. I think that the fact of being in a mugshot, would make a person depressed, and they wouldn't want to smile, if you understand what i mean.

Hey, I've wondered that myself. I'd like to think that if I ever got caught doing anything, (not that I ever do anything wrong..lol) that I'd feel like I may as well have some fun with it. Plus for other people to see my smiling mugshot would be cool.
But honestly I hope it doesn't happen. I'm afraid of losing my job.

In general, the police prefer that mugshots are taken with a normal expression on the face. That way, when used for photo line-ups, they all look similar and the person is more likely to remember the normal look that the suspect had on his/her face.

When a mug shot is taken the police want front and side photos with the natural expression on the criminals face. A smile can change the looks of your face. Your ears also have to be visible because each persons ears are different and are a strong identifiable feature. They have guide lines they follow when taking mug shots.

smiling is actually not allowed. A mug shot is supposed to look like you. Not too many people walk around smiling all the time and a smile can actually change the way you look.
