Basically, the hair is made up of temporary and permanent bonds, which hold your hair in the shape it is naturally. The tempory bonds are the ones that are broken when its wet, and the ones that hold a blowdry/set etc in place.

The permanent bonds are the ones that need to be broken then set again when perming.
The peroxide in the perming solution breaks down these bonds, softening the hair. When set around the perming rods, the hair softens to the shape of the roller.

When the hairdresser is satisfied that the bonds have broken down enough, your hair is then neutralised.

This process reforms the broken bonds whilst they are still on the perming rods, creating the curls.

The rods are taking out then more neautraliser is applied to ensure the hair is fully covered.

An anti oxident conditioner is then used to stop any leftover neautraliser in the hair from working (it should all be rinsed out anyway, this is a precaution)

You can have allergic reactions, that is why a skin test is carried out before a perm, and also a pre perm test curl, to allow the stylist to choose the right curler, type of lotion, and the processing time.

The curl will "drop" within 2 weeks, and this will be the curl you are left with untill the perm grows out.

Hair has to be in heatlhy condition before perming, so that the perm can develop evenly.

Perms were a good idea in the 80's for a reason. The big frizzy look was in.

It lasts about 6 months and it costs a lot. It really ends when your hair starts to grow out though. not a good idea, unless you're just fed up with your hair and to the point you wouldn't mind just hacking it off.
