My 5 month old son is always staring at the TV when it is on and he is in the room. Tonight we put on a "Baby Einstein" video and he seemed to enjoy it, but it does not have a suggested age on the box. Will watching TV at 5 months old affect his development or health at all?

It depends on what he is watching. At 5 months your child may not be able to understand all he is seeing. Most likely its the colours & movement that attracts his attention. While TV at an early age can cause him to shirk other activities later [reading, games, exercise] some tv now cant hurt. Remember to keep it educational & non violent.

Btw. if you go to Baby Einstein online you can find the age ranges & possible suggestions from birth & up.

Please stop listening to all these wacko people who say you shouldn't let your kids watch TV. Let them watch! Cartoons are colorful and they are looking at colors, light and sound. DON"T stick them in front of the TV and put on Baby Einstein! LET THEM BE KIDS!!! I really don't think you can make your child be smarter by having them watch those Eienstein tapes, but I do think you can make them a nervous wreck because they will go to school and feel like they HAVE to be perfect or they will dissappoint YOU. When they get older and want to watch them, that's okay. But please don't force it down their throats. Nobody ever said that every child in school had to be a straight "A" student.

No, because I let my son watch television when he was just a few weeks old. I would set him up in a seat and put him in front of the television every morning on channel 8, to watch Sesame Street and he learned a lot from them. He graduate from High School with honors and was on the state honor society. You just have to pick out what you want them to listen to and watch.

It isn't bad as long as you are not using the tv as a substitute for your attention. Parking the kid in front of the TV all the time to have more time to yourself is not good for the child.

Yes, for a 5 Mo old, that is way to soon. Even though he might not get that much out of it, to much TV has been linked to HD. There are better ways to stimulate you little one.

it should be fine... at 5 months he is watching the colors, the movements and the facial expressions.... taking it all in.... learning about his surroundings.... i doubt its harmful at this age .... and just think... another month or two and a whole new fascination will set in.... crawling! then he'll find lots of other things to look at! :)

If there is no violence or extreme loudness, it's probably very good eye exercise for him. I doubt that he can understand any of it, but everyone at any age understands blood curdling screams so keep it calm for him.

I would think so, see what it has done to all the rest of us, well over that five month mark. Turn it off, till he's a lot older, thirty maybe, years that is, not months, lol.

Not too sure. But keeping it on something like the discovery channel couldn't hurt.
