Are tattoos and piercing a sin?

a temple our bodies may be, but if you look at any temple, mosque, or church, at the minimum, they do all have external decorations. So logic says if you can decorate a building, which has been done since ancient history, why can you not decorate the body as if it was a "temple"? People have worn tattoos and pierced body parts since they discovered you could do this. As far as I know, and I do have an extensive religious knowlege spanning several religions, God has never forbidden tattoos or body piercing, and there is no religious text that says anything about God condemning a person for having a tattoo or piercing. That condemnation is one created by man so therefore should not apply in the list of possible sins.

My body isn't a temple, it's a playground!! lol, i think our bodies are a blank canvas, waiting to be filled with the beauty of our lives. Tattoos (and piercings) are not a sin, they are a form of expression. Each tattoo has meaning behind it; it is connected to some important part of the bearer's life. No, not everyone sees them that way, but mine all have meaning for me. Ask someone what their tattoo means and you will likely hear about an experience in their life that imprinted a message on their heart.
*The difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people don't care if you have tattoos or not.* (WOW! I never realized exactly how many self-righteous, judgemental people there still are until I went back and read some of the answers to this question!)

The Old Testament specifically says that tattoos are a sin.

"Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD." (Leviticus 19:28)

The New Testament meanwhile does not specifically say a tattoo but it tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit so we must take care of it so that we can honor God.

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

If you haven't had a tattoo don't get one anymore since this isn't favored in the Bible.

Yes, your body is a temple.
Your temple - to take care of as best as you can.
Wether God said so or not!
You should respect your body!
But that does not mean you can't get
a tattoo or some piercing. Just make
sure it is in good taste (your taste of course -
because you will be the one that has to

1 Timothy 2:9 says "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;"

While it does say women, no where in the Bible does it say that men can. Evidently, women back must have been caught up with this practice. We know this, because it says "...costly array". "Costly array" isn't something that can be put on quickly. So, I am sure if men back then had the same problem, no doubt they too would have been included in this verse. In fact, for all we know, they did some of these things, but not to the extent of wasting so much time with it.

So, based on this scripture (and that it applies to men as well), are tattoos and piercing a sin? Assuming that the tattoos aren't objectionable, no, it isn't. If you got a tattoo every single day, then yes, it would be.

I'd like to address a couple of things here.

1. If you're looking at this from a Christian perspective, then Jesus was the fulfillment of OT law, you can't just pick and choose which parts of Leviticus suit you.

2. Tattoos, as permanent markings, really cannot be considered a fad.

3. I know plenty of older people who are heavily tattooed, and love their ink. I sat with a grandmother a few weeks ago while she got her first tattoo, a really pretty, tasteful piece.

4. Since it is permanent, it's not a decision to be taken lightly, it takes thought and consideration. Tattoos are not a trend, but some styles of them are. Be careful to look for meaning. Regret and laser removal are not necessary if you choose well.

5. We have moved well beyond the days when tattoos were strictly in the realm of sailors, South American prostitutes, and circus freaks. Large percentages of people have them, and love them.

6. Tattoos have been around about as long as people have, and a lot longer than the bible.

It comes down to what you like. If you like them, and want one, get one. If you don't like them, then don't get one. Simple.

Assuming there is a God and the body/temple thing is accurate . . . what does that have to do with tattoos and piercings? The anti-body-mod movement is a product fanatical religion and has no real basis.

Some say yes and some say no. For the ones that say yes and are christians then you should not cast stones.

You see if you have pierced ears then in deed you are sinning. If you are wearing make-up then you are sinning. If you are born again and have tattoos then you should have them removed, because after all the body is thy temple.

I am a christian and I have many tattoos and many piercings, but I know that god does not judge me by my outward apperance but by my heart.

I dare any mortal man to judge me, because the only one who can is God.

Sin- may be the most commonly misused word in English (or other religion based societal language). Sin is beautiful on its face, ugly underneath. Who could you possibly be hurting by getting a tattoo or piercing? Who else's life could that possibly effect? Stop looking for a reason to not get a tattoo, just don't get one if you don't want one.

Not a SIN because we are free of sin in Christs Death and Resurrection But === Why would a True Christian want ot pierce or tattoo her body and bring herself down to the level of the ""drunken sailor" or the ""South American Street Prostitute""?

These are the people who made it popular in this Country!
