How much icing does it take to cover a cake? size 13x9 inches?

Please, please, please make this from scratch instead of buying a can of frosting. (But if you think of a can of frosting, that's the amount you'd need to frost a cake.)

Below is the link to TONS of icing recipes--100's of them! It depends on the flavor of the cake which frosting you would use.

Here's a nice basic chocolate frosting recipe:
BUTTER CREAM FROSTING

3 tbsp. softened butter
1 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa
2-3 tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

In small bowl, beat butter. Add powdered sugar and cocoa alternately with milk; beat until smooth until a smooth spreading consistency is achieved. Blend in vanilla.

From 1/2 to 3/4 cups, depends on the thickness of the icing you want to use.

16oz (1lb) should be enough unless you are one of those people that like the real thick frosting on your cake I just like a little thin coat on mine
