I was adivsed by an auto dealer that if I sell it - it does not need a smog certificate. Is this true? If not, who has to smog it? It is 1973 Chevrolet El Camino.

In most states a classic car is exempt from emissions tests. Check with your state's DMV to be sure of the law in your state.

Classic autos (over 25 years in age) are exempt from emmission standards as long as you have the car registered as a classic auto with the special license plates. These vehicles are not considered your everyday vehicle, but usually your secondary car which you can take to cruise nights or car shows and clubs. They normally have a mileage restriction of about 3000 miles per year.

What's classic about a '73' El Camino? That was just after the government castrated our autos.

Check your state's DMV or Registry of Motor Vehicles to see if it is necessary. It depends on where you live and how many miles it will be driven. You don't tell where you are. Some states do not require an emission certification, some only require it in certain counties.
