1 Corinthians says "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. "
So, we know that God put humans in a position to teach and lead others. So, putting your faith and trust in those of leadership is Biblical.
2 Peter 2:1 says "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."
You can't trust just anyone. How do you know who to trust?
Matthew 7:15-16 says "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
You will know who you can trust by their fruits (or a thorough background check).
What what qualities should you look for?
1 Timothy 3:2-7 says "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. "
You might think it is impossible to find such a person. I know of such people of various religions that actually meet those guidelines. They are out there, you just have to look.

Strictly answering your question of "How many people have a religion" ? only,..
As far as I know, as of the last count taken in the later part of of 2005, September,I think, it was approximately 51 million,71 hundred and change, like about 57 or something. It has probably changed a little since than but for what you want to know it should suffice. By the way, to my knowledge there were no Priests, ministers or preachers included in the count
Hope this helped you

I am stealing this response from another user (CPR) but, remember christianity is the newest religion on the block. How arrogant of christians is it to discount the others?
Now my part. The bible is stolen from other cultures. Christianity was born from a compilation of beliefs and has been used and abused for the needs of the believers and stratified over several different sects so it can be further manipulated. There are over 1500 groups under the christian umbrella. They were created because of differences of bible interpretation. For example, some were created to allow for divorce, some to switch to the proper day of worship, to allow equal rights to homosexuals, etc. I attack christianity so much because there is little unity and how can you trust an organization that is constantly splitting itself up and has such opposing beliefs within it's own people?

My religion does not have preachers, ministers or any religious hierarchy- Everyone is to actively and independently investigate the truth. My spiritual growth is in my own hands. I have read the holy book of my Faith.

I am agnostic and eclectic when it comes to religions, I do believe that there must be some higher being but i just dont believe in god and if you don't believe in him then you'll go to hell, cuz what about the people who have never even heard of god, what about them? Would God send innocent people to hell if there was one? Anyway, I believe in little bits and peices from all different religions and put them together in my own thing.

I don't believe in religion. It's hard to imagine that there is a higher being looking over the entire universe when so many horrible things happen every other day. Good or bad, I don't think they exsist.

There is no bible in my faith (neo-paganism). Its nice, being able to believe what I think is right. There are just two basic principles, harm none and what you do comes back to you threefold. Why trust a book to tell my what my soul already knows?

My priests - yes, I know many - are human, yet have studied for many years and are dedicating their lives to God and service to God and His people. I am very grateful to them for their service. I trust them because I believe they are trustworthy. I do NOT trust everyone! Yet, what "I" believe is MY version of the tenets of the Roman Catholic church. I think I'm very blessed to have my religion - I am "full-blooded" Catholic - and am grateful to my ancestors for providing me with this religion which will serve me for all eternity!
