Its a big filter that is in a plastic box under your hood. The car sucks air into this box, through the air filter and then on into the engine to burn with the fuel to make you go.
Every oil change you should check the ail filter, change when its dirty. Any auto parts store will have a small book in the isle with the air filters so you can locate the numer you need. Figure about $10 or less.
A clean air filter alows your car to breath easier, in turn giving you more power and better gas mileage.

An air filter or an air filet? You mentioned both.
An air filter is just what it sounds like. It keeps dust and dirt from mucking up your engine. They're cheap and often can be installed in your driveway, but you might as well let the WalMart guy do it.
An air filet is a cut out of the flank of air, most delectable at higher altitudes but richer in nutrients closer to sea level.

The air filter cleans the air on intake to the engine. It's important that it is clean. It takes the dirt out of the air before it gets mixed with the fuel. Might want to get one, because you will get better mileage and the car will run better. Good Luck :)

Before you worry about a air filet, see if Wal-Mart will sell you a dictionary and english textbook.

It cleans the soot out of the air before the air is mixed with your gas...The mix needs to happen in order for the little explosions in the cylinders to take place.
In older cars, the air filter was in the big round case on top of the engine. They're much smaller and harder to find in newer cars.
If you can find yours, they are actually cleanable, if you can't afford to replace it. Just take it out and hose it off, just like you would with your pool filter. Let it dry (completely) and put it back in.

Your engine sucks in air. The filter makes sure nothing bad gets in the engine (dirt and other particles that will hinder performance).
The cleaner the air filter, the more efficient it will work. The need to be replaced every so often.
Make sure they show you your old one before replacing though.
