A food or water bowl?
I left some big plastic bowls out with food and water when we went out of town last week. Now he is constantly licking and scratching himself He has scabs and makes himself bleed. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow, but could the plastic bowl be the cause?

I'm almost positive it's the bowls after hearing that they can be allergic to it. Usually we feed them out of metal bowls, we just left out huge plastic bowls when we went out of town last week. Which is when he started getting irritated. I wouldn't have guessed that was it until my husband mentioned a possibility. I'll definatly post the vet's dignosis tomorrow!!!

Yes, cats can be allergic to plastic. Some cats develop acne, itching, hair loss, or swelling, I've seen cats get what looks like a fat lip from plastic bowls. The reaction depends on the cat. But, depending on where he is licking and scratching, and where the scabs are, it could be something more serious. It could be fleas, but thats not very likely if you left him indoors. if its all around the face, then it could just be from the plastic. Thank you for making an appointment with your vet! Thank you for being responsible, and not depending on this site for the right answers!!

Yes, plastic bowls can harbor bacteria and cause some cats and dogs to have reactions to them. They can give cats what is called feline acne. Cats and dogs should only eat out of ceramic or metal bowls, never plastic. There may be other causes to what your cat has, but it is a possibility that it is the bowl. Only your vet will know best. If it is the bowls, your vet will give you something to treat the acne and tell you to buy new bowls.

Yes, it is possible for a cat to be allergic to plastic bowls. I had one. Get stainless steel dog bowls or ceramic.

Switch to a glass or metal bowl, your cat probably has bad chin acne, black crud on his lower chin from the food particles ground in when the cat eats out of the bowl. Plastic bowls make it worse. Switching to a flat plate can work better too. Wash his chin with a warm wet rag (no soap) or warm salt water tonight and tomorrow, that should be enough if you do that plus change his bowl.

An allergic reaction to plastic can cause sores to appear around the mouth and nose of the cat. Switch to either metal or glass.

Plastic can have tiny cracks or holes in it, which are perfect places for bacteria. The same is true for wood and I think there's another material that is especially known for it.
The best material for food and water bowls is either ceramic or metal. My mother's cat got for Christmas from me a stainless steel food bowl with a no-skid surface on the bottom (he likes to flip his dish, and push it around, so now he can't). The stainless steel is easier to clean, and you can be sure it is completely clean, because there are no cracks or holes.

Plastic breeds bacteria. He's probably not allergic to plastic, but if the bowls aren't clean, he could have some type of infection. I doubt it was the bowls though... good luck w/the vet!
