Her birthing date was miscalculated and they came before she had been moved away from my other dog and the necessary time to get used to her whelping area. she had 3 pups in the front yard under an old 4 wheeled cart. The rest were delivered in the dog/house whelping area made in the backyard. We've lost 4 already 2 definately from her squishing them 1 I had left her for 15 minutes to shower and I believe it was still-born the last I just found this morning limp and hardly breathing, I tried every effort to help it along but lost it too. Thanks for any input.

I hate to tell you this because it is not easy (time consuming,) but you should remove them from her when you are not present and bottle feed with a formula for canine pups. Let them get as much milk from mom as possible so they can gain her natural immmunities to disease. Lots of info. on web about bottle feeding. If you leave the mother filled with milk she can develop mastitis, so let them feed supervised as oftyen as possible.

Pig rails are boards that are placed around the inside of the whelping box so that puppies can be pushed under them instead of getting smooshed against a wall by mom.

Mine are 1x2s nailed about 4 inches above the box floor.

You need to get her in where they can be properly monitered. Puppies are pretty much a 24/7 job. Put up a baby gate or shut her in a room. The dam generally prefers to be alone with her puppies, away from other dogs or strangers.

Having her pups outside and smooshing them must be awfully upsetting for mom. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it was your decision to breed a litter and now you need to do the right things for them.

This answer depends on a lot of things.
Is it her first litter? Is she young, old, or timid ?
She may be trying to hide the babies to protect them.
As hard as it is, you may have to separate them whenever you are not there to watch her (if that is an option)
You can place the babies in a small laundry basket for up to 2 hours at a time between feedings. You can extend the time away from mom by about an hour every three days.
Be sure the babies are warm when they are away from mom.
Only separate them when you are not able to watch her.
Large breed dogs often try to cover the babies to keep predators from finding them. This is a natural instinct to protect the babies.
If she has several babies she may push one so close up under her it will smother.

you should have made arrangements for her to be in the house with you so you could keep an eye on her. especially if this was her first litter. You're best bet is to set up a whelping box with pig rails in the house and make arrangements to keep the other pets in another part the house. Even if you set up someplace outside with pig rails, what's to stop her from moving them again? if she feels insecure or threatened she's going to move them. you need to have this dog and the remaining puppies INSIDE, you've already let four be killed, do whatever you have to do to ensure the others make it, even if it causes inconveniences.

Bring them in the house and if you can make something with pig ralls in a hurry that way she can not sqeeze them in the coner. Just need to get her use to the pups and calm her down.
