I know, sounds pretty goofy but here goes.
My wife grew up in a traditional southern baptist home, her grandmother and mother made chicken & dumplings quite a bit and from what she says, their "dumplings" were long (about 4"~6") and narrow (about 1"~2" wide).
Which I refer to as chicken & strips, which drives her mad......
I grew up in NY, didn't have chicken and dumplings that much but when I did, they were DUMPLINGS, small to medium sized chunks of the cooked dough.
She says that is not what dumplings are supposed to look like and I say she is wrong.
If I win I get to divorce her, if she wins I have to stay with her....
just kidding........
I realize that they can be enjoyed either way and that it is up to the person making them, yadda yadda yadda, I am just trying to get a consensus on the correct way they *should* be made, thanks for your time.

Okay this is a hard one.
I am from a southern baptist home as well and I have never had dumplings made in strips. Chicken n dumplin's being one of my favorite dishes as a child and still so as an adult I think my mom would kill me if I changed her recipe. She has always mixed a dough a little thicker than biscuit dough and dropped spoon fulls of the batter into boiling broth. It comes out in a somewhat ball of cooked dough about the size of a golf ball. i have seen ppl that make there's with strips but that has never been dumplings to me it has always been chicken noodles or chicken pasta but not chicken n dumplin's.
hope that helps
lol let me know who wins

your wife's description sounds more like a noodle than what I think a dumpling should be. You are correct, a dumpling is like a "lumpling" not a "noodle". Kind of round, plump, and if made correctly, totally delicious. Just a little trick I learned, you can use refridgerated biscuit dough, to make quick and fluffy dumplings as a short cut, just break them into 3 or 4 pieces each and drop them in the boiling chicken stock.

I am with you on the dumplings appearance.....I grew up in "the country" and dumplings were always round or semi-round.....but on the other hand she could be right.....it be that the people that made my dumplings for chicken and dumplings were lazy and just wanted to roll up some dough and throw it in the pot. I think you're both right.....If your wife wants to take the time to make "strips" as you call them then she's right in doing so

As a kid, our dumplings were made from the recipe on the Bisquick box and were dropped on top of the boiling chicken stew, then the lid was put on and they were steamed until done. They came out looking like white fluffy clouds, and were one of my most favorite things in the world. Thanks for the memory! Off to find some Bisquick! (Do they still make that?)

I grew up in the northeast----without chicken & dumplings, but we did have dumplings in our beef stew.
I think it depends on the pot used; and who makes them. I drop mounds of dough per
dumpling, actually at least 6 per pot. Whatever! They come out different everytiime!
