You should be looking for a reputable breeder, not a CHEAP macaw. A few others said that macaws aren't cheap... and they shouldn't be cheap. Nothing about keeping them is cheap, let alone the initial price. They need quality food, huge cages, exotic bird vet care and a continued supply of birdie toys to keep them stimulated and happy... not to mention the love, patience and interaction required from its people family. To sum it up, they're expensive as hell. I'm sure many people with macaws have had to repair a few things in their home too (walls, furniture,) because they are mischievous and clever birds.

The price should be your last concern if you are even considering taking on the responsibility of such an intelligent creature that may live longer than you. My parents' macaw is in their will, left to me if anything should happen to them.

I suggest you do more research into what it takes to live with a macaw.

The costs do not come close to the commitment required.

The last thing this world needs is another bird rejected by its people family because they bit off more than they could chew.

Buying A Macaw

Macaws DO NOT come cheap! If they do, you'd better call the police, because they are either stolen or kidnapped from their owners, or worse, they were robbed from their nest as babies.
Respectable breeders are the ONLY way to go, and they are expensive, but you will save MUCH more money in the long run, because they raise the parrot by hand, and keep it in great health.

Macaws are a HUGE responsibility. Every morning and evening, they shreik at deafening levels! Your neigbours will hate you! They wreck everything they can get their beak on, so be careful of your furniture! If they're not properly cared for, they will pluck their feathers out, and catch diseases! They need constant attention, sometimes up to 3 hours per DAY, or they'll get bored and get into trouble. Imagine a bored child with pliers and a small saw.

Still, if you can handle this for about 70 years, you'll be very happy with your companion. Plenty of tricks and talk to impress your friends!

Try looking into a bird sancuary first. Macaw's, and other large birds are very demanding, and have long life spans. They are also messy, loud, and can be dangerous. Learn about the birds first, before buying one.

I used to want an umbrella cockatoo, and after interning at the Zoo with the birds, realized that you have to be a very committed person to them, and after a few weeks, the birds were driving me nuts, and I was only there a few hours a week! I was also scared of the scarlet macaws, because they were big, could take my finger off if they wanted to, and didn't like anybody but each other (they were a bonded pair).

Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are never cheap. The initial price is nothing, I promice, they have a 4 foot wing span and thats at least a 600.00 or more dollar cage. They have to be out of cage 3 to 5 hours a day. Your not going to believe the food and toy bill and cage acc. I have a 1 year old grey and cockatiel, The Grey is the best talking and intelliegent parrot 1000.00 and teil was 125.00 and I have enjoyed my tiel just as much, but I cant believe the monthly cost. You do know you have to feed them fruits and veggies every day with pellots, seeds snacks, and they throw it all out, I would try a tiel first, They also need a perch for shower, tons in and out of cage, I have to hide my reciepts from petstore because my boyfreind just cant take it. The otherday I 185.00 on food and toys and maintence stuff, Ill need more in 3 or 4 weeks.

Both my sister and I had big exotic birds, only thing is this is a big responsibility they live as long as people. I had a blue front amazon and my sister has a African Grey. do not buy from a pet store unless you know the bird is hand fed, and in the states legally. We bought our birds from a private bird aviary which he also rescued birds too. so i hope this helps.. and the best for you and your future bird. Some times pet shops can tell you were priviate aviarys are. I would check them out too ask for references if they are good they will supply you with what ever you ask.
