You obviously have cable and or satellite.
No way you get the History channel otherwise.
As for pitching out your television, pitch it this way, I will make room for it.
As for programing, watch public access or public television. Avoid the news channels. Watch most channels at least one day to see what is out there. Use your program guide. That is what it is there for. And if all else fails turn it off and read a book, write a letter, call a friend, or do something entertaining. Make love to your wife. Who knows?
And as for technology, it is not the problem. The problem is what we do with our technology. It is all about convenience. 200 cable channels all designed to separate the market. Cars designed to set you apart from your neighbor. Planned obselesence designed to make you by more. Part engineering so that the average guy can no longer fix what he breaks. Mass cloning so that it is cheaper to replace than repair what you break. Social engineering so that the rich feel better about the poor having less than they do. Society is forcing people to subscribe or disappear. Raised property taxes due to higher house prices due to remodeling. Computers that will only be good for a year of so before the programs become incompatible with the net or the CPU. Cars that die in five years just about the same time the insurance does. HDTV being rammed down our throats like we ever needed it. Does anybody still use the postoffice any more?
Postage keeps going up, because; we are on the computer using our cell phone and text messaging. Kids have no sense of punctuation, or grammar, or penmanship. So, there is a problem but it is us and not the machines.
Find a comfortable norm and try not to spend too much of your time doing one thing or another. And rent "The Sure Thing" with John Cusack, it will give you some ideas in the lecture scene where the English teacher dresses down her students. I won't tell you more, but; you can learn a lot from that film.

Your not going mental! Your going intellectual so...keep the computer, chunk the TVs - or at least put then in the garage. NBR and things like this can challenge your mind if you can make it through the boring, long winded people. Stick with it.
BUT don't take the TV away from your family - rather divert them to other things - but definately take it away from your kids. Tell them that they have to do ___for so many minutes before they watch TV. They want be happy but they'll get over it. TV makes people fat and lazy - we eat around the TV tell our kids to shut-up for the T. It really is a pitfall! Sounds like the only channel you might enjoy is Sundance.

you can pitch a fit, turn a cartwheel, or throw your tv out the window, but one thing will remain constant; technology will go on with or without your support friend. don't get me wrong i, too, hate the sight of people my age bitching and whining about how their life sucks while living it up with seven strangers or seeing overrated you-and-me's that can barely carry a note turn into overnight celebrities, but throwing a Tyler Durban-style revolt won't make a producer west of the Mississippi lose a minute of sleep.
sorry.
you have to look at it like this; sure 95% on the tel-lie-vision is crap, i know this, therefore, i won't be affected by it. there's a production company that airs stuff on MTV called Mindless Production. that is funny to me because they're telling you what they're making; a half hour of pure crap. it is up to you to invest that half hour in a way that is productive to you. got a hobby? get into it. post questions on here, answer a few. if your wife doesn't buy into your theory just yet don't force her. just do your thing, and she'll follow suit.

Turned mine off three yrs ago. I finally had enough Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Of course, on the weekends there's always Rimto Latino or Siempre en Domingo, but, you can only watch so many fat-asssed, cowboy hat wearing broads imitating that chick that used to imitate Iris Chacon.
Don't miss it either.

I pretty much agree with you. There are 6 or 7 shows on TV that I would feel sad never to see again. TV just isn't that great and it wastes everyones time.

The television companies transmit what its viewing public wants.
It reflects the public's "taste" - or lack of it.
It isn't technology which will cause the demise of your/our culture, it's irresponsibility.
