I think your description is of a Black Widow spider. The "X" is often described as an "hourglass" shape. I used to play with Black Widows when I was a kid. I wouldn't be dumb enough to do that now. Even as a kid, though, I was smart enough not to let them get anywhere close to be able to bite me. Be careful, they are pretty poisonous. By that I mean they can make you really sick besides harming your skin. I don't think anyone has died from a single Black Widow bite, but don't try it!

P.S. I just did some belated research. A Black Widow (female) spider's venom is FIFTEEN times more powerful than a rattlesnake's! Lots more people die or get violently ill from rattlesnake bites, though... The reason: There is a lot more rattlesnake venom in their typical bite than there is in a typical Black Widow's bite. But even so, that poisonous stuff is bad news!

it could well be a species of black widow. catch it in a jar, and check it out
