I've heard up to 20%. That's seems like alot, seeing as they are getting paid for the service regardless of the tip. It's not like a food server or valet who doesn't make much without tips. I've also heard that very good hair stylist are insulted by a tip b/c they see thier service as an art. I agree it is an art. I'm confused.

PS I would never dream of not tipping. I've been a bartender/server for years and I know what it's like to get stiffed. I do always tip nice. I just wanted to know the real rules on this subject.

15% if they did what they should...20% if you REALLY like what they did...less than 15% according to what you didn't like. That goes for every service that tips are expected for.

Depends on what you have done. A guy with an easy haircut that only takes 5 minutes can get away with only a $2-5 tip. A girl that has layers cut and has the stylist blow dry and style it for her should at least tip $5 or 20%. I get highlights and a cut done at the same time and often tip $15 to $20 because I'm taking up 2-3 hours of my stylist's day and she always does a great job. As far as a stylist being insulted if you tip - I doubt that because who doesn't want to earn more at their job? 20% is a good estimate if you like your hair stylist and are happy with the results.

I usually tip $1-$10, depending upon the work they did and how well they did. If it's just a trim, I'll usually give $1. If it's something that requires a long amount of time, such as a beautiful up-do for an event or perhaps dying my hair, I'll give anywhere from $2-$10, depending upon the final price. Attitude has a lot to do with it, also! If the hair stylist has an attitude the entire time or isn't very friendly, I'll reflect that in the tip, much like a waiter/waitress.

Up to 20% is flattering, 10% is still nice, a few dollars is sweet, and zero tip is considered a statement of dissatisfaction. Some salons/barber shops don't even allow tipping, so if that sign is up, don't get your stylist in trouble by making a show of it -- but that's usually just show for the IRS anyway... and you can slip it under a jar or into a handshake etc.

IF it's the Creative Director, Executive Designer, Master Barber, and so on, it is considered an insult to tip them at all-- since the sense is that they do it as a sort of calling, not as a living, and charging you is the salon's option, not theirs. I know, it's pretentious, but so is a lot of the art world...

Good Luck :)

You should always tip, although u dont have to think of 20%! Give who ever washes your hair about a $2 tip. Who ever cuts you hair a $5-$10 tip, depending on how much you spent and the service you were given. Also give anyone else who helped in the process a tip too. If one person cut and washed your hair, tip them between $6 and $12.

for a twenty buck hair cut leave atleast 3 bucks. its just nice.

I leave four to five if the stylist did a good job.

What people dont understand is that unless they own the salon, or have a share in it, theyre not getting paid a whole hell of a lot, and just like food service, they survive and thrive on tips.

Usually a salon will rent their chairs to licensed stylists, and that person gets paid hourly, minus how ever much a week for the use of the salon. Thats why tips are so important.

I grew up in the family owned salon, so iam not making it up.

i would love for this question to be answered by the hair dressers, because they are the ones getting it... if my cut was $28, i usually pay 5-10 dollars in a tip.... if i buy a hair product... a bit less.

I always do 20% no matter what. If you want them to do a good job next time I suggest you do the same.
