--Check out your local bugs!!! Bring some small disposable cups, and start overturning rocks. For every bug you find, have them draw a picture of it. Make sure they decide it's color, shape, and how many legs. Then look them up online to see if you can find the type. ( you're teaching them research skills at a young age!)
--Take a walk and make a map. This one is easy but cool!! Bring a couple of crayons and a sheet of paper, and make a map as you walk. Draw squares for each house, and show each crossroad. Your kids will learn to make symbols, and also learn how to measure to scale. (well, close!)
--Chalk!!!!! This is seriously the best. We take a box of chalk to our local park, and "decorate" the bench areas for other visitors. This gives the kids a sense of community while they are developing artistic skills! My son feels very proud when people approach his drawings, telling them that he worked hard to 'share' with others..... he's five. (chalk is very inexpensive)
--if you have one, the good, old-fashioned playground is great!! The kids learn how to talk to other kids they don't know, and they also run themselves silly.
--SAND....... if I could share one thing with every parent, it would be to please build or buy a sandbox!!! Four broad pieces of wood nailed together can make a simple frame, then just fill it with sand. (can buy sand at a hardware store, or bring it home in buckets from the beach) I have not found anything that will keep my son's attention longer than the sand box!! Add a little water-- and a few more hours--- seriuosly, it's amazing!!!
Good luck, and have a fun summer!!!

There are sll kinds of fun things to do. There are alot of Zoos that have one free day a week or certain hours there is free admission. Check in your area for parks or trails to walk or bike. You can go to the library and check out kids art and crafts books alot of things can be done with things you find around the house and yard. Hope you have a fun summer.

Check with your local library. Our local library offers all sorts of programs from language day camps, (sign language, Spanish, even Latin for little kids), Drama camp, and weekly art classes, really good ones with the history of what is being taught and good materials for the kids to use. They also offer a reading incentive program with parties and all sorts of fun things for the kids. Have a great time with your guys!
