No shoes on the carpet helps to cut down on vaccumming and also picking up after yourself.

I let my sweeties(ages 7 & 5) know that if they make a mess they must clean it up. If they do not clean up I grab my special basket and keep the toys until the next day. They don't like that at all so I hardly ever have any cleaning problems. I also give each one of them a list of chores. My 5 year old is in charge of emptying the waste baskets and cleaning the mirrors. My 7 year old washes dishes and dusts the end tables. I have taught them to help clean since they were one. It isn't an overnight process.

We have many rules, but as far as cleaning, when I've had enough of the mess I make them pick it up. Sometimes I turn off the TV, withhold their treat or playing with friends until it is done. I think doing this has helped a little in preventing it from getting messy. They think twice before they pull out a ton of toys.

To keep our household running smoothly we had to lay down some ground rules. Things were getting out of hand and I spent most of my time cleaning up after everyone. We sat down with the kids and explained the problem. We had them come up with ways they could help out. We made a list of each persons responsibilities. I think they were a lot more open to it having been involved instead of just being told what to do. I think it's important for children to understand that a home is a shared space and everyone must do their part to keep things clean out of respect for other family members.

LOL, I'm not the one to give the advice since i have no kids and my place is always a mess. Heres some tips I thought up though if i did have kids. Have a designated playspace and don't let them ruin other parts of the house. Give them color pencils instead of crayons and markers (less mess, easier to clean up from walls {especially if they're erasable}) Make them earn their tv/play/videogame time by logging their chores. If you made a list of different chores for them to do each day and made them follow it, then promise them fun time in return. Maybe even expand the incentive and allow them to play much more for much longer if they continue to keep their living spaces clean and do chores without being asked. It will give the child a sense of having more for working hard.

Our twins are 2 and so we are just starting rules. With neices and nephews our rules are:
-pick up after yourself and put away toys before you start a new activity
-with the twins we make a game and sing a clean up song when we have to pick up toys.
-we are teaching them not to throw toys and to treat knick knacks and breakables with respect (do not touch)
It really depends on what you want to accomplish by what rules you establish

I would suggest: no smoking in their rooms unless the window is cracked, no beer or alcohol after 9:00 PM (on school nights), no watching porno movies with a member of the opposite sex, and at least every other word out of their mouth must be something other than a cuss word.
