this seems to happen to me a lot lately but its usually cause the girl is hot. So am I thinking with my peter or with my heart then?

I've frequently fallen in lust at first sight, but fortunately have had the sense, or lack of opportunity, not to do anything about it. That's usually your *john thomas* talking. And not doing much thinking, either.
Falling in love at first sight is a little less common, but known to happen. Usually, I need to KNOW the gal awhile in order for her "non-beautiful' desirable traits to become noticeable & appreciable. That's usually your brain or your heart talking.
Try thinking with the cabbage, instead of the brussel sprout.
