Sounds like an old wives tale to me. I'd never heard such a thing until this post and I fed my children watermelon (when they were old enough to have solid food, anyway).
Edited to add: I see some people are saying that it's because they could choke on the seeds. No offense intended to anyone, but it's sort of a "no duh!" situation - if someone's handing their *infant* watermelon without having taken the seeds out then, well, someone needs parenting lessons!

My son is five months old and loves to suck on watermelon. There are large chunks of watermelon with no seeds in them in a seedless watermelon.

Even seedless watermelons have seeds that an infant can not digest very easily.

maximum folk start up infant on infant food by potential of four-6 months. as quickly because of the fact the child is sitting up and noticing what others are eating, he would desire to attempt it. whether this is a gentle food --pudding, mashed potatoes, yogurt, etc -- and the child is already used to eating from a spoon -- circulate forward and attempt a small quantity. do no longer start up extra beneficial than one new food at a time. Wait a minimum of a few days beforehand attempting a 2nd food. this supply you of project to work out if the child is allergic to a particular food. Ask your scientific expert what he shows -- some docs would somewhat you wait till 6 months, others will approve of commencing quicker. yet, it continues to be as much as you.

The big black seeds are easier for an infant to choke on...
or maybe just harder to get through their digestive system

because there are so many damn watermellon seeds. Unless you are sure that you get every single seed out, they could choke on them.
