No idea but lots of tourist who visit Mexico get braids done and it looks awful on them.
I read some of the answers and now I know the reason why I have never been out with a girl with braids. One week without washing their hair..................ooooooooooooooooooh.. that stinks (literally)

I wear braids (my avatar resembles me ALOT!!!) - no it's a great question, because i wonder sometimes about other people. I wash my braids once a week, and cleanse my scalp 2x a week w/ this scalp treatment that my mom got me from the health food store. My dad has dreadlocks and u may be wondering how ppl keep those clean? He uses all natural homemade shampoos & oils and his hair is always clean and smells great. on the other hand i dated a white boy w/dreads (i guess b/c he reminds me of my dad) and i had to school him on caring for them because he washed them 2x a month. Its really hard to get to an itch with braids b/c that spot u are trying to get to may not be accessible depending on the braid style. So it ultimately depends on the person's hygeine, and education. What i mean by education is, read up on upkeep before getting a new style, for instance.. If i was getting a perm, i would do some research on what i can or cant do - like swimming in a pool - chlorine could damage it.
Hope this helps.. I tend to linger a bit... I talk just as much in person.

depends on whether or not its the person on hair or not, or if its braided on the scalp or those micro mini braids (zillions). If its just their hair and braided on the scalp ....they usually last about 2 weeks then they take them out and wash their hair. If its the zillions that they have they can still wash their hair whenever they want. African American girls dont need to wash their hair everyday because we have coarse hair, and no African Americans dont get lice in our heads because we have too many oils, and use a lot of hair products in which the lice cannot live in.
Sometimes when the braids are too tight, it causes the scalp to be pulled which makes it irritated and causes it to itch as well.

On a vacation in Mexico, I had my hair braided. I kept the braids in for the whole week. I washed my hair everyday, just smothed the shampoo over the braids then rinsed it off.
The braids were great! I could swim in the ocean or the pool and not have to deal with tangles and completely refixing my hair to go into a bar or a nice restaurant.

I don't think thats an offensive question. It would depend on what your hair texture is. Some white hair can be trained so it doesn't have to be washed more than once a week. I would say with black hair, it would be about the same. To take good care of those braids, really you should put some type of moisturizing conditioner on it.

I am white and Hispanic and i've had braids before and washed my hair everyday. When washing yiou just have to be careful. The scratching could be due to the hair products used for conditioning and when the weather is warm it runs a little like sweat then it will itch, just like anyone else with or without braids.

After about a week or two is when the hair would usually be washed. You cannot wash hair that is in braids. Once you take them out, wash your hair, even if you are going to braid it right back up again. YES it itches, your hair is braided very tightly; that in itself causes the scalp to itch.

Ok, so I can answer this one for ya....I have in laws that are black and wear braids and I myself have worn braids. The itching is not about it being dirty its more the scalp is irritated cuz the hair is being pulled, that itches. But yes there are ways to wash ur hair with braids, it does depend on whether it is your natural hair, synthetic hair, or human hair braided in, how you wash it. Synthetic hair has to be washed differently. Hope that answers your questions.

African American women can along time without washing their hair. Depending on the style of braids (cornrows vs mini braids) and the type of hair (i.e. human hair or synthetic)
Human hair you can wash but synthetic you can't
Cornrows are braided to your scalp were as the mini braid isn't it's.
Make sense???

My African American friends do watch their hair with the braids in. They dynamics of African American hair is very different than white hair. go to the ethnic hair section at the supermarket and see they need specular moisturizers and stuff to do certain hair dos. i wish I could get the braids but i have stringy hair that slips easily out
