The mentality of the German and Japanese citizens was probably very different at the end of the war. Don't forget that Germany was being bombed heavely for a couple of years and the fact that cities bore the brunt of it probably wore down on the people so that by the time they surrendered there probably wasn't much of desire to continue in a struggle that they had already lost and had lost so much because of it.
The Japanese were more along the lines of Muslim extremists today in that they were willing to kill themselves to kill the enemy and that many civilians had committed suicide to avoid the "dishonor" of capture by allied forces. The emperor had also stated the responsibility of the Japanese people to fight to the last man, women, or child. This is why the U.S. used nukes, so to avoid an invasion that would have been in size and scope probably up there with Normandy. And also to try to avoid the deaths associated with trying to occupy and pacify such a hard core population.

Germany actually surrendered before the a-bomb was ready for deployment. It's doubtful tht we'd have had to use it in Europe even if Germany had'nt surrendered. The decision to use it in japan was due mostly to the "hokaiidu" military philosophy dominant to the the japanese culture. From their perspective, it was better for every man woman and child to die rather than accept defeat. Intelligence reports said that the japanese government was ditributing weapons to any civilian capable of holding a rifle.
The prospect of every japanese citizen becoming an instant soldier meant that there'd be millions of deaths on both sides. The advent and use of nuclear weapons (tough to make that call) Was seen as the only other option. Their use, and the horrible death count from 2 single weapons made it clear to the japanese government that we now had the power to vaporize every japanese citizen without a single one of them having even set eyes on an american soldier.
It must have been tough, sickening order to give, but the alternative was worse. It's another "killing for life" paradox, sure, but the thousands who died at Hiroshima, and nagasake made it possible for millions of others on both sides to live.

We had a majority of their nuclear physicist, over here working on the bomb and we needed them to believe we would not bomb their home land. Simple diplomacy to get what we wanted. Hm, maybe that does work.

They hadn't finished inventing it by the time Germany surrendered, and they wouldn't have needed to anyway because by 1944 the allies were kicking a$$ anyway.

Because the war in Europe was basically over, where as the war in Asia was still going on, and Japan was urging their soldiers to fight to the death rather than surrender.
