it's bruised. blood is in the muscle where it shouldnt be

An IV needle is normally a high gauge so that fluid can be administered through the drip and into your body. Well, we have nerve endings everywhere and a needle stuck into your arm is going to alert a nerve that there is an invasion. After the invasion has concluded, there will be tenderness at the site. For it is our brain coupled with our marvelous central nervous system, which alerts our physical body that pain has arrived. Thankfully, even though the IV area may be tender, you still have the blessing that if something happens, your body will immediately let know that there is a problem. Often early treatment can save lives. Without our nervous system, we'd see more death.

Your arm hurts for 2 reasons. 1. you have a puncture from the needle used to insert the IV and 2. the medications and/or iv fluid injected into your IV caused irritation of the veins. If your arm is red and extremely painful that maybe something called phlebitis which is severe irritation of the vein. you can put warm compresses on your arm to reduce the pain.

Because they had just stuck a larger than usually needle into your arm..more specifically your vein leaving a small hole that your body must repair....of course it would hurt silly!

Blood leaking from damaged tissue/poked vein lead to pooling of blood in arm lead to bruising(blue-black) lead to pain. pain persists for few week even after IV cathether is removed. Once pooled blood reabsorbed, pain subside.
Other causes: Infection, poor IV technique resulting in extra tissue damage, IV fluid being sent to and pooled in tissue instead of being infused into vein, etc...

Because you just had a needle in your arm with fluids going in you for a long period of time.

probably because an iv is an invasion to your arm and the blood that has built up during insertion has resulted in slight bruising.

Because the needle is really long that they put in you probably hurt because of that and bruising you get.

because the needle went through your skin and since skin is so thin and sensitive on your arm it hurts.
