It doesn't matter either way, its up to the customer to decide if they want to tip or not, you need not feel obligated.

The question is is it ok for cashiers to place a tip jar. NO!! It is not ok . The have a job that requires them to ring sales. That's it. They knew what their job was going to be when they applied for it. To seek tips for it is outrageous. A waiter or waitress or bartender is a different story. They actually have to use personable skills in "serving" food, beverages, etc. But, a hostess or cashier doesn't. Dunkin' Donuts or Dairy Queen. No it is the same thing they get paid min. wage. It's the law. So no a tip jar is to forward......

It depends. Are the cashiers being paid at least minimum wage? if so, then they are being rather pushy in putting out a tip jar. In many restaurants with sitdown service, the waitstaff gets paid a special minimum wage that is several dollars less than the normal minimum wage. The reasoning behind this is that the tips in those restaurants will be adequate to raise the waitstaff's pay to at least minimum wage.

i think it's ok, working in the food industry is hard and it's hard work. Starbucks has a tip jar and often people leave their change and the tip is split among the staff. Making minium wage isn't enough to live on but often times, some struggling people don't have a choice, it's always appricated to leave them something.

That is a little weird, but considering how many rude employees I have encountered behind the counter than maybe a tip jar is a good idea. Then we can show appreciation for the nice ones!!

Why? That is not a service over and beyound what they were hired for in the first place. The only real individuals who desevres tips would be a waitress if and only if she gives excellent service. She's gets a lesser hourly wage because of this.

They can put them whereever they want but I'll never put a tip in it. I think that it is rude to beg for more money. These are usually in places where I have to stand in line and then swipe my own card to get my food. If anything they should be giving me a tip or discount for doing most of the work myself.

It's an option most people ignore. How else would they receive a tip for excellent work. Restaurant workers often get paid less based on the idea that they would be receiving tips.

No, I don't get what that's all about. Why should we tip people who only take our order at the counter? Tipping should only be for those who actually walk to your table to serve your food (the real "food servers") and provide quality customer service.

It is customary to give a tip to low-paid service workers; whether they prepare your food, clean your hotel room, bring up your luggage, drive your cab to take you "to go" somewhere, or sell you a cup o coffee (which a majority of people take "to go").

Hopefully, the tips are shared amongst all hourly-paid crew. Full-time jobs at minimum wage doesn't get anyone near the poverty level, these days. Every little bit helps.

Of course, if the service sucks....Don't bother. : )

no i dont. it think its rude.
it implies that they have done something to deserve it, which they haven't.
like at dunkin donuts why should i be pressured to give someone a tip for doing nothing more than their basic job? should he/she get a tip for washing their hands after using the restroom also?
Should i consider that to be excellent service?
i understand tiping waitstaff and bartenders (i used to be a bartender) its the bulk of their pay and a majority pay taxes on those tips (even if they lie about the amount)
