Do I need to go to the school, or the state?

Go to the school; they will help you with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This will include the Pell Grant, Federal loans, work study, etc. Make sure you get this done by the deadlines posted at the school, because the state grants have different deadlines and they are applied for automatically when you apply for the other.

If you, as a single mother, have earned less then $30,000 last year, you will qualify for a full Federal Pell Grant.

I too am a single mother and a full-time student. You can really make it work for you (at least here in California) easily. If you are wanting to go to a community college, first talk to the financial aid office, they have all the information on what is available to you. Personally I have a Pell Grant (2025.00 per semester) and I was also granted a Board of Governor's Waiver which gives me completely free tuition for all classes. I also am a part of EOPS which is a program that gives me 300.00 per semester for schoolbooks as well as a food card for 100 per semester and free parking pass. On top of all that, I receive AFDC in an amount of 555.00 per month plus foodstamps and MediCal - all of this is completely legal because all of the money that I have gotten for school comes out of what is called Title IV funds which are "non-countable income" to the State Social Services office. I have been in school now for a year and a half and have also been raising my child (now 17) and living well. Good Luck.

First speak with the Financial Aid office at the school you want to go to. They will know what all of the grants and programs are that you are eligible for.

You can also contact your state's department of education for what grants are available and what types of programs or schools are included.

the financial aid office at whichever school you are enrolling in will be able to provide this information for you. You will have to complete the FAFSA application. Both Federal and State grants are given based upon that application.

Good luck!

Start by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Once you have completed this, you should then talk to the financial aid officer at the school you are interested in attending. Based on the information on the form, they can determine which programs that might apply to you.

Good luck!

FAFSA.com or FAFSA.edu, or just go into your browser and type in fafsa. then you will need your tax returnes from this last year, and you just fill out the application. you will also need a P.I.N number. You will be able to get that on the FAFSA home page.
