Because there are no towers in the area or because the signal can't get through the geography.

National parks are horrible for getting reception on a cell phone because the gov't wont let the companies build towers on the land. So with out towers you get no coverage, no coverage no service.

A lot of it also has to do with population density. Cell companies build their towers where they will have the greatest impact - where there are the most people. That way they hit the greatest number of consumers with the least amount of cost. Which is great if you live in NY but really sucks if you live in North Dakota.

The use of cell phones depend on antennas that all link together like the cells in a honeycomb. Each antenna is capable of receiving and transmitting, but has a very limited radius by itself. In group they are able to "keep track" of each cell phone's location to cut down on time lag during communication. Together they are able to form a system (or antenna net) that allows the communication to happen. If these antennas can't cover the landscape like a net--you get no service. That makes the Grand Canyon a serious challenge and can send a regular tech addict with a case of online withdrawal into a serious panic. But if there is any money in it, they will probably soon find some other way to solve that particular problem

Most national parks don't have Cell phone towers inside the park. They are "damaging" to the environment and take away from the beauty the park was meant to protect.

However alot like Yellowstone, pay big money to have cell towers right on the boarders or inside ranger stations.
