Does anyone think that the Bible should be updated to modern times? Although it does outline many of the pivotal ideas of our society (ie not stealing, not killing others, etc), it also condones slavery, the degradation of women, and the wrongness of homosexuality. So should it be updated to fit modern times or not? And if so, what should change?

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT

I agree that it is out of date, but I don't think that you can just go and arbitrarily change the content. And by whose standards would it change?

I think that there are many misinterpretations of the bible over the centuries.

I am going to be ordering one that is supposed to be a direct translation from the orginal Aramaic New Testament to see what the difference is. It is called The Modern New Testament : Translated from the Original Aramaic Sources by G. Lamsa.

Having said that, I also think that much of the bible directly speaks to that generation's society and political culture and therefore, not a lot of it has to do with how things are in this day and age, although I feel that Jesus taught us timeless lessons of love and acceptance and faith.

But I don't believe that Jesus was the only master and that timeless lessons were taught by Mohammed and Buddha and many other masters as well.

The Bible cannot be out of date because Jesus hasn't returned as yet a second time and the Bible outlines events up until that time. Also, the Moses laws condoned slaver and other such things but it was against us Deut 31 but Jesus' death nailed Moses laws to the cross Col 2. However, the Ten Commandments still remain today because Revelation 22:14 says that only those who keep the commandments of God have right to the tree of life. Homosexuality has always been wrong throughout the Bible from Moses law to after it was abolished it still is mentioned that they will not be in Heaven that cannot be outdated because Jesus hasn't come to take us there as yet. Last but not least, Revelation 22:18,19 states that nothing should be subtracted or added to the scripture.

The customs written on the Bible are constantly being updated by the Church. About what you say of slavery, etc, if somebody thinks that those customs can still be valid nowadays,
that person would be found in an asylum.
Remember that the II Vatican Council declared that it was no longer necessary for women to cover their heads in church. The idea was considered obsolete, and other things as well.
Therefore, the Bible has not been modified, but the customs found there are revised by the Church in order to determine whether something should be made different

Yes, and it has been. The one we are using now is version..uhm 4 or 5 I guess. Over a period of 2000 years not that many.

But you can not change content just the translation. There are many misconceptions about women in the bible.

fi: The woman on the wall of Jericho. She is called a prostitute. The text in the original language read: "A woman that had lain off 7 sins". Oh 7 sins.. so very sinfull, must be a prostitute.... Nope. Since the deadseascrolls we know that that actually means she was a very learned woman. A mystic so to speak of the 7th grade (to give it a name)

But I doubt it will make any regular translation soon.

Isaiah 43:10 “YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that YOU may know and have faith in me, and that YOU may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none.

Isaiah 46:4 Even to [one’s] old age I am the same One; and to [one’s] gray-headedness I myself shall keep bearing up. I myself shall certainly act, that I myself may carry and that I myself may bear up and furnish escape.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, for it comes down from the Father of the [celestial] lights, and with him there is not a variation of the turning of the shadow.

Isaiah 41:4 Who has been active and has done [this], calling out the generations from the start?
“I, Jehovah, the First One; and with the last ones I am the same.”

Malachi 3:6 “For I am Jehovah; I have not changed. And YOU are sons of Jacob; YOU have not come to YOUR finish

So If God does not change, why would we need to change his word?

And no, the bible does not condone slavery, or the degradation of women. It does however not condone homosexuality, which is wrong!

Oh no, the Bible does not need to be updated. Why? Because God inspired man to write the Bible through the Holy Spirit. When it was written it was intended to stay that way to provide a source for mankind to live by and use when in doubt of lifes every day moments. It is okay to read different versions of the Bible to help us understand the word better. Think about this if we started updating the Bible, Man, meaning we would change it to benefit our personal needs.

No, it isn't out of date and not a word should be update to fit a society. The Bible is the account of man's time on earth; his past, his present and his future. Its also accounts God 's mercy, God's Son and our life with him if we chose to accept him. Where does it condone the degradation of women & salvery? As far as the Bible pointing out the wrongness of homosexuality -That's because it is wrong. The Gay and Lesiban community gives credit to science what has been in the Bible for years. The belief that they are born Gay - Duh! Everyone on earth is born with the ability to sin. I don't think a whole society should be made for liars just because it's the sin that lairs feel is the most difficult for them to conquer. Yes turning from temptation is hard ... life is hard for all sinners. The tools we need to survive and fight is in the very book in question.

that's the problem with religion, Theyn know Bible must be updated since msg was not writen for us. It was writen for ppl 2000 years ago. And paul who markets cristianity like no tomorrow says Jesus will return in thier own time. Who cares what bible says, Cristians don't study the bible. Church prohibits study the bible for the same reason. Pppl will ask too many questions and give same answers they gave 2000 years ago would not work. So they just teach from BIble what ever they want. They pick few passages that can be aplicable to human nature and they will hide everything.
IF GOD would want to make his word to be understood by all Cristians at least he would make it clear . But for what? BIble was writen by Satan so it will confuse all Cristians and he did a good job at that.
Its like we have a car from early 1900 and trying to run it today and every time it fails we just saying its the great concept.
Therefore GOD exists.

it seems to me that you haven't read the bible it does not condone slavery nor the ill treatment of women and homosexuality should not be considered at all. same sex relationships will lead to no one having children, std's, and the downfall of the human race all together.please remember it was Adam and eve not Adam and Steve that got us where we are today.the bad press that you hear about the bible comes from people who are radicals and want to use the word of god to make there point.i hope this helps and no god didn't screw up when he had the bible written it does not need to b updated to do so would mean god is not all knowing

Since the bible is the "word of God" and many believe that word is infallible, you can't alter anything in it just because you don't like what it says. That includes it promoting slavery (Exodus 21:7), saying that the universe is geocentric (Psalms. 19:1-6; Joshua 10:12-14), and saying that the earth is flat (Daniel 4:7-8).
