It depends on the fruit or vegetable.

Tomatoes, NOPE. Tomatoes are best off on the counter. You don't want them under 55 degrees.

Potatoes, NOPE. Put them in a dark cabinet. Same with onions.

Most fruit does last longer in the refrigerator, as does broccoli, carrots, lettuce, cauliflower and similar veggies.

Depends on the fruit or veggie, very few it will actually make the shelf life shorter, but for the most part yes it extends the life of the food.

I noticed that banannas get black real quick in the fridge, but they stay good for a long time.
