average today to gain when you're pregnant is a pound a day, pregnant for 40 weeks (full term) = 40 pounds.
It sounds like alot, but that is what my doctor and obstetrician said. I gained 48 pounds with my son, (I'm not a fat person), and I lost 30 of it in the 1st 2 weeks (I was really retaining alot of water) and my son is now 5 months old and I have maybe 8-10 pounds left to lose.
I know some woman who have gained over 60 pounds with one kid and I know some who have gained only 25 pounds with one kid. It really depends on the mother and how big the baby is (my son was 8lbs. 10oz.)
One thing you do have to watch for is pregnancy diabetes. If you are gaining too much weight too fast, your doctor will get you to get a glucose test and see if you have diabetes or not, if you don't who cares how much you gain if you can lose it after the baby?

Most people lose weight after preganancy. Are you suffering from postpartum depression? Maybe you're depressed and eating a little more than usual. Maybe you can get out and take the baby on a stroll. That will make you both feel better. Babies love it outdoors.

If you are healthy and active during your pregnancy, you should be losing weight instead of gaining. I also read a study that breast feeding helps a woman lose alot of weight as well.
