where can i find a "tick" or a "check" in Word to insert into a document?

go to Insert menu >symbols

As above, go to Insert > Symbols. But don't forget to make the font 'Wingdings' which provides you with that tick symbol.

go to INSERT and choose SYMBOL.

you can format the bullet item to be a checkmark.

format \ bullets and numbering

make your choice, and you're set.
