Catholics will say that St. Peter was the first pope. Honestly, the first pope is up in the air.
This is an abbreviated list of popes from a Catholic source, so it may not be entirely accurate. I do not apologize for that statement; the Roman Catholic religious leaders hide what they are ashamed of, even (especially) from their congregation.
St. Peter (32-67)
St. Linus (67-76)
St. Anacletus (Cletus) (76-88)
St. Clement I (88-97)
St. Evaristus (97-105)
St. Alexander I (105-115)
St. Sixtus I (115-125) -- also called Xystus I
St. Telesphorus (125-136)
St. Hyginus (136-140)
St. Pius I (140-155)
St. Anicetus (155-166)
St. Soter (166-175)
St. Eleutherius (175-189)
St. Victor I (189-199)
St. Zephyrinus (199-217)
St. Callistus I (217-22)
St. Urban I (222-30)
St. Pontain (230-35)
St. Anterus (235-36)
St. Fabian (236-50)

The first Pope as we know a Pope was Gregory VII. He reserved the title Pope for only the Bishop of Rome.

The first Pope would have been the first Bishop of Rome, who I think was Peter.

Peter was not the first Pope, nor did Christ appoint him. Please read your Bible carefully and don't let a preist or preacher interpret the Word for you. Precept upon precept, line upon line, the Bible will interpret itself.

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
With love in Christ.
