Looking to buy our first video camera and are pretty impressed by the new HD cameras. However, wondering if HD is better or the 3 CCD technology when it comes to actually saving, editing and repurposing the video. Also, any perspective on getting a camera that saves to standard tape or a memory stick? Thanks!

I my professional opinion, HD is only good if you are planning on doing videotaping professionally. Also in order to really benefit from all of the features of HD you have to have the right lighting and the right shooting angles and the experience to know the difference. There are plenty of 3CCD cameras that give superior results. Last month I videotaped a fashion show where I exchanged video footage with other videographers who were using HD cameras. The other guys were shocked to find out that the footage from my 3-chip camera came out clearer than what they shot with their HD cameras. With my camera you could actually see the dust particles in the air and an occasional fly. The best that I could have done with an HD camera would not have been significantly better being that the room was not very well lit.

This is really going to depend on what you're going to use the video for. How will the video be viewed? If it's going to be shown on standard TVs, or through a digital projector, then the HD capacity will basically be wasted- the display simply won't have the resolution to take advantage of it. On the other hand, a 3CCD camera will look significantly better than a 1 CCD camera even if it's displayed on a normal resolution TV.

Memory sticks are generally going to have extremely insufficent record time, unless you're talking about extremely high end solid state cameras, and I doubt you are.

Your best bet for pro-sumer level camera is going to be a Canon GL2 or XL2.

if your a first time user then i suggest that you purchase those easy to use cameras w/o the many manual settings.
3 ccd- is better than 1 ccd camera & most models are of higher models so they are more expensive. it is also used by professionals
HD - is High Definition at this point it is used solely by professional if you cant meet the requirement w/ the 3 ccd (by the way all HD cameras are 3 ccd) which is tinkering to many manula settings used by professionals then this is not for you. This is cameras are very expensive & not all manufacturers have at this point.

that is a touch over $3,000 (it frequently is going for $3,600), even if the Cannon XHA1 is one heck of a digital camera! It shoots HD, has a 24F potential, zoom, concentration, and iris earrings, etc, etc... i easily were given mine on eBay for $2,900, plus a pair more effective batteries, a case, and an academic dvd! there are a good number of effective deals on eBay, yet make certain the corporate has good comments on expensive products previously paying for.
