Smart thing to do is to just use the popcorn button.

I followed bag directions once on a very high wattage microwave and we pretty much had to evacuate the office because the bag caught on fire and filled the whole office with acrid eye burning smoke.

All that was left was a charred brick. And we couldn't get the smell out for months.

Well the directions on a microwave popcorn bag say to cook until there are at least three seconds between pops.

Keep cooking the popcorn until there is a full second of space between popping.

Two minutes and twenty five seconds on high. If the popping slows down to about a second between pops. take it out. cooking it any longer will result in burnt and smelly popcorn

Most microwaves already have a button marked "popcorn". Please press that. If you're microwave does not have such a button - it's usually 3.5 minutes.
