Don't worry about it. The dog is better off eating the same food you eat then the commercially bought dogfood. I feed mine anything it wants other than dogfood. I use the raw fresh diet that is 100 percent better for them. I cook for my dogs and feed them fresh veggies that they love. I do not feed tomatoes and onions as they are not good for the dog. Some dogs cannot tolerate alot of grease from cooked foods. If meat is given it is better really to give it to them raw.

During dinner time put your dog out side with his food until everyone is done eating and dishes are cleaned up.
The next problem is your dog is going to start getting into the trash for table scraps so keep an eye on that to. once he knows hes not getting table food he will start eating his own food and don't worry he wont starve

Tell your dad that it is time for tuff love. The dog will not eat is food because dad is spoiling him. The dog will refuse to eat the dog food as long as he is getting the people food which is not a balanced diet for him. He may go so far as to not eat for a day or two, holding out for the scraps. What would you be like today if your dad had fed you just what you wanted? This is what he is doing to the dog. Could cost the dog problems in the long term.

Dogs are pack animals by nature, and humans are the head of the pack. In nature, the head dog ate first, and then the others got the "scraps". As long as he has one of the head of the pack feeding him table scraps, he will not bother eating dog food. Face it, it probably tastes better too. Your dad needs to see that it is not as healthy for the dog before he will stop. Get a pamphlet from the vet and let him read it. In the meantime, remove the dog from the area when your dad is eating dinner. There is no reason for the dog to be there at that time anyway as it promotes begging at the table. Feed the dog his own food before dinner. If he does not eat, do not worry. Sooner or later, your dog will eat his own food, he will not allow himself to starve. We had to do this with a dog, and she did just fine after a few days of waiting it out. The vet even suggested it, and after a bit she had no problem eating her food before we did, and then going to lay down while we enjoyed a peaceful dinner with no drooling, begging, or whining. Good luck!

Tell everyone to stop with the table scraps (of course it will still happen from time to time, but for the most part control it)!
To get him to eat his dog food in the meantime (assuming it's dry food) try adding a SMALL amount of wet dog food each meal, UNDER the dry food! If this doesn't work do the same with wet cat food, if this fails as well try small amounts of people food to get him out of the habit!
Then slowly cut back on the wet (or whatever way you go) until you don't need any at all!
If by chance you are already on wet food, do what I said above with people food slowly until nothing!
Good luck!

Here's what we tell everyone who walks into our vet clinic with the same problem as you're having... Feed him absolutely no table scraps and keep a good dry dog food down for him... When he gets hungry enough.. He'll eat it.
Try adding a little bit of warm water to the dry food and stirring it up a bit.. Makes a form of gravy in the bowl with the food.

We save our table scraps and mix them in with the dogs' food. They love it, and it gets them to eat their food. They also feel like they are special because they know that they have gotten some of whatever we had for dinner. If we are having something that they don't like, then we just mix some canned food in with their dog chow. They are happy and healthy.
Also, when my husband feeds them, he makes a big deal over it. While they are waiting for him to prepare their dinner, he says, "Oh, this is going to be good!" and "Mmmm, look at this!" and "Oh, Oh, Oh, what lucky dogs you are!" They just love the production, and it gets them all excited about eating. There are never any leftovers.

actually studies show that domestic house pet life span has decreased by about 50% in the past 50 years because all the commercial dog food is filler crap. Back in the 50s when dogs primarily ate table scraps their life span was longer. Please do some research on maybe a raw food diet for your animal. you'll find out a lot of interesting info.

Completely cut out all table scraps! They are very unhealthy for dogs and should only be used for training. What brand of dog food are you feeding? Make sure you get a high-quality one, like Innova or Nutro- It really makes a difference! Your dog may be picky and not eat for a couple days, but he will not starve himself if you just feed kibble.

as long as you dad continues to feed the dog from the table he will continue to reject his own food. It will also cause behavior problems like counter surfing (jumping up on the counter). Quit cold turkey and after a few days the dog will start to eat his own food again.
