The satisfaction of having helped make the world better. Building that water treatment plant, or designing that sewer system, or building that hydro-electric dam, and so on.

Also, the glory of having designed and built that bridge, or that dam, or that building. Civil engineers make a relatively permanent and lasting product that we can see and touch. A new drug that we just made isn't something that we can walk on, or feel. A better computer chip isn't something that we can hold. Each will be made in huge quantities and distributed far and wide and will never be seen by their designers again. These are both worthy and noble undertakings, but civil engineers like stone, and soil, and steel, and concrete. So the satisfaction of the finished product plays a large role.

The other attractive part of civil engineering is the application of physics and mathematics in a practical way. Moreover, the math and physics can often be employed outside, beyond the confines of the flourescent light of the office building.

That is why.

Why Become A Civil Engineer

I would have to say that there is more money in the civil engineering because they are paid top dollar by cities and states for their work on essential community need such as roads, bridges, parks, etc. These are funded by the government and are very well paid and there are always projects especially in developing cities. As for architects the oppisite is the case. They are usually privately funded by companies, individuals etc. If you are a good architect then you can make alot of money. But that means you are singled out amongst thousands of architects as the best. Hard to do! But they do get paid alot too but just not usually as much consistent work as the civil engineer who has thousands of things in cities across the state/country where they can pick the best paid ones over others. Hope this gives you an idea as to how I see it.

I'm not a "people person". I'd prefer work quietly by myself.

Engineers are technical problem solvers. The word "geek" applies here. Trying to figure out cost effective solution to a problem or need.

I like to work on projects which are "larger than life". Projects that are so big, no one person can do it, a team effort

There is always something new to learn with each project.

And the money is pretty good.

I like that I'm allowed to have my mind in the gutter all day long.

You know...because I'm designing sewer systems..get it? *groan* It sure isn't because engineers have a great sense of humor.
