My dad is an atheist (unfortunately) and he celebrates Christmas because he says it is more commercial than religious these days...

They can, and still be atheist. Christmas is a scheme to get people to spend. It helps the economy. It is not a religious holiday anymore. An atheist can celebrate it as economy relief day. They can do this by just buying gifts, and keep the cycle going. We like to see Christians commercially exploited. Yet most do not see this. Most do not do anything out of the ordinary on that day.

Of course we do.

The natural followup question is: Why?

The response to this is a simple history lesson in which we relate the fact that "Christmas" was co-opted from pagan celebrations and is not even a Christian holiday.

The nice thing about Christmas is that it has evolved into a time that means whatever you want it to mean. The pagans can run "skyclad" through the snow. The Christians can be humble and reflect on their savior. And us atheists can spend time with our families and not worry about whether we will be judged too harshly if we drink eggnog and eat too much fruitcake.

I don't believe in Santa, but I still have pictures of him in my house over Christmas.
Being Atheist doesn't exclude us celebrating. It was, as other posters have pointed out, a Pagan festivity originally anyway. I celebrate the holiday, not the birth of Christ. I take advantage of the fact that my families will be togethre and I generally have a good time.

I don't understand why Christians celebrate Christmas when it is a pagan holiday. I would think that an Atheist would have a better reason to worship it since Christians are not supposed to worship false gods or celebrate a false god's holiday

Yes, of course we do!

We perform ritual sacrifice under our trees, often times small children or cats. Then, we steal other people's "Manger sets" and put make-up on Jesus' face, draw boobies with nipples on Mary, draw an erect penis on Joseph, make it look like the wise men are having a three-way, make the shepherds look like they're 'doing' the sheep, and to top it off, we take the gold, frankincense, and myrrh to a pawn shop.

After that, we run naked through the streets singing carols backwards while making the sign of the cross backwards and upsidedown and poor blood onto the snowmen that people have built outside their homes.

After that, we drop grenades down chimneys and end Christmas eve by going for a piss on a few churches.

I hope that answers your question.

Why not? Just because one may not share the beliefs of a religion does not mean that one cannot celebrate a birthday. Atheists do not necessarily deny the existence of Jesus. They deny his Divinity. Atheists are just as capable of spreading good cheer and love toward their fellow man and woman as any Christian or other religiously affiliated person.

Why wouldn't we? Christmas is really a pagan holiday and Christians celebrate it.
