The itch is an allergic reaction to the mosquito saliva. It activates the inflammatory response, mainly due to histamines. Not all people are allergic to mosquitos, but those that are suffer quite a bit.
Try not to scratch. Breaking the skin can invite infection. My pharmacist just yesterday recommended Benedryl 2% gel over calamine for mosquito bites on my son. Helps calm the reaction faster than Caladryl. Anti-itch only products won't reduce the swelling, just the itching.

Hmm... I have never had a mosquito bite HURT..; they ITCH! You might be dealing with something else, entirely.. like chiggers. And, they itch, too.. but also CAN hurt, esp. after scratching them. Make yourself a paste of baking soda and water and put it on the bites (if it's really mosquitoes).. if it's chiggers, paint each bite with clear nail polish. Either way, you've got to resist the urge to scratch as it only makes it worse and will leave scars. Chiggers burrow into the skin and come back out at night to bite you again and burrow into another place on your body.. If you "polish" them, they sufffocate!

It itches because a mosquito injects some of it's saliva into you when it drinks your blood. The saliva causes the itch.

A mosquito spits into you a type of numbing agent.....but that eventually wears off and then you feel the irritation effects later after the bite....and that's why it itches / sometimes hurts later. :)

The stinger has a bit of venom or poison, not enough to make you ill, but enough to irritate your skin. And when you itch it irritates your skin further. Try some anti-itch cream so you quit tearing up you skin

I think that after they suck your blood, they inject a tiny bit of poison into you to make it itchy.
Did you know that only female mosquitos bite?
